CU women pick up critical LSC win over TWU

LAWTON – The Cameron women's basketball team picked up a critical Lone Star Conference win at home beating Texas Woman's 75-69 on Wednesday night in the Aggie Gym.  With the victory over TWU, the Aggies are tied with the Pioneers for third place in the LSC standings.

The Pioneers entered the contest picking up votes in the latest WBCA Coaches Poll.

Natalie Halbeib picked up her first career double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.  DJ Vallier continued her strong presence with six blocks which tied a career mark and was one short of a program high; Vallier was the most recent LSC Defensive Player of the Week.

"When we are really good it is because we are a team," said head coach Tom Webb. "Different kids get going and nobody knows who is going to be the leading scorer that night. That's when we are the best, when we just don't have to go to one kid."

Despite 52.9% shooting from Texas Woman's in the first quarter, the Aggies stayed on their heels thanks to four shooting fouls that put Cameron up to the line eight times.  Cameron hit seven shots at the line and trailed TWU by only one (22-21) with Halbleib picking up seven early points.

The close play continued into the second period and it took seven unanswered points that was capped off by back-to-back treys from Halbleib and Caitlin Clancy to put the Aggies in front 40-36.  TWU would get a pair of free throws before the buzzer, but the Aggies would head to locker room with the lead.  Halbleib led the Ags at the half with 12 points with the team winning the rebounding battle 20 to 17.

Out of the locker room the Aggies had the early momentum and opened the door to a 50-43 lead at the 6:09 mark to force TWU to burn a timeout in an effort to kill the CU momentum.  Texas Woman's cut back into the Aggie lead and tied the game at 54 each by the 2:30 mark, but a Dayla Threatt jumper and a free throw from Cristina Soriano kept CU ahead 57-54 after three periods.

Both sides traded the lead twice in the last quarter with Cameron taking the lead at the 4:45 marker. With less than a minute remaining, TWU would come within three points of the Aggies, but Halblieb answered with the final successful shot of the game, a three-pointer at 24 seconds to open the Aggies advantage to six for the 75-69 victory.

Cameron edged the Pioneers by three in rebounds with 48. The Aggies also converted 14 TWU turnovers into 18 points. Cameron committed 18 turnovers on the game with which TWU scored 14 points off of.

Kenesha Saygo led the Pioneers with 21 points, seven boards, and two assists.

Cameron will return to the floor on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Midwestern State.
