Four Aggies post double-doubles in CU loss at UTPB

ODESSA, Texas – The Cameron volleyball team opened their match against UT-Permian with a two set lead but would fall 3-2 to the Falcons (19-25, 24-26, 25-23, 25-19, 15-12) on Saturday afternoon.

The Aggies out hit the Falcons by a narrow .194 to .185 margin with UTPB committing 30 errors to CU's 19. But the Falcons came out on top besting the Aggies by ten kills with 69 total in the comeback.

Four Aggies recorded double-doubles on the match in Jenna Gillean, Paige Dixon, Brittany Lawson and Shelby Mench.

Gillean put down a match high 22 kills to best her career number of spikes in a season to total 303 on her sophomore campaign. She complimented her offensive performance with 11 digs earning her seventh double-double of the year.

Dixon earned her third career double-double after recording 11 kills and 26 digs. Also with her third was Shelby Mench who contributed 38 assists and 12 digs.

Lawson set a new career high in two categories with 12 kills and 19 digs for her first double-double.

In another notable performance, Sabra Washington notched four blocks for her second match in a row.

The opening set saw tightly contested action with seven ties and four lead changes. Cameron held a 12-8 edge for their second lead of the game until the Falcons went on an 8-1 offensive run with just one attack error for the 16-13 advantage.

But the Aggies battled back, tying the game twice more and for a final time at 17 all before taking the lead after UTPB incurred back-to-back attack errors including one forced by a Sabra Washington block.

CU fended off the Falcons for the 25-19 first set win aided by six kills from Gillean who hit .455 to start.

Set two started off with two straight Falcon errors bringing CU a lead they would hold through six UTPB ties until the Falcons got it back on a service error at 19-18. Back and forth action ensued with three late lead changes but tied at 24 all, Gillean put down back-to-back kills for the 26-24 CU win.

Cameron held a steady lead in the third set opening up for a five point edge until UTPB went on a five point run to come within one at 20-19. Cameron put down three points, but the Falcons had more, chaining five in a row to prevent the Aggie sweep with a 25-23 advantage.

The Falcons used their momentum to carry them to a 25-19 victory in the fourth set and remained ahead of the Aggies in the fifth for the 15-12 comeback victory.

Cameron falls to 2-20 overall and 0-13 in the LSC, while UTPB is now 7-16 and 3-10 in the league.

The Aggies will begin a three match home stand starting with a contest with Western New Mexico on Oct. 28 in the Aggie Gym.
