WEATHERFORD, Okla. – The Cameron men's basketball team fell to Southwestern Oklahoma State on Wednesday night, 73-71, for their third loss of the season.
The game was close throughout the first five minutes, before SWOSU took a small six point lead at the 12:45 mark. CU battled back and took the lead with just 6:23 left in the half, thanks to back-to-back threes from
Delvonte Pierre. However, the Bulldogs charged back and retook the lead during the last four minutes of the half. They held a 36-32 lead going into the break. Cameron struggled from the field in the first half, hitting just 34.4 percent of their shots, but hit 29 percent of their shots from the perimeter and 3-6 from the free throw line.
Tyler Williams led the Aggies at the break with eight points, while Pierre and
Tyus Momoh each had six. Devin Pugh had nine for the Bulldogs.
After trading buckets through five minutes of the second half, each team got on fire from three point range. Cameron hit five and SWOSU hit two through the next five minutes. At the 9:40 mark the Aggies were just down one point, 62-61. The Southwestern stretched their lead back out to seven, but with just over four minutes left, CU made a run, thanks to a Momoh three and two layups by Williams and
Christian Barrett. With 12 seconds left, SWOSU's lead was back at one, 72-71. CU fouled and the Bulldogs' Markeise Champion went 1-1 at the line, giving the Aggies a chance to tie the game with a two or win it with a three with just 10 seconds left. Cameron ran a play to get
JV Long a look at a three point shot, but the shot was missed, and SWOSU got the 73-71 win.
Cameron finished the night shooting 39.4 percent from the field, 37.1 percent from three point range, and just 43 percent from the free throw line. They controlled the rebounding battle 40-38, and turned the ball over just nine times, compared to SWOSU's 12 turnovers. CU was led by Momoh and Williams, who each had 17 points. Momoh went 5-7 from the perimeter, while Williams led the team with four assists and three steals while grabbing five rebounds.
Southwestern Oklahoma shot 44.6 percent from the field, and went 9-27 from three point range and 14-22 from the charity stripe. They were led by Pugh, who finished with 19, while Reshardd Harris chipped in 15 points and Champion had 10.
The loss puts Cameron at 7-3 overall this season, while SWOSU moves to 2-6 with the win.
CU will return home for their next game as they host Lubbock Christian on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. for their first ever "Cover the Court for Kids" game. Aggie fans are encouraged to bring toys to donate to the game, receiving free admission for donating. After Cameron scores their first point, fans will be asked to throw their toys onto the court. Each toy collected will be donated to the local charities.
