LAWTON – Four errors in the nightcap swallowed up an opportunity for the Aggies to take two from #20 Texas Woman's on Friday afternoon at McMahon Field. Instead, CU settled for a split taking a 12-2 win in five innings and falling 7-6 in the second game.
Cameron trailed early allowing two runs in the second inning before the Aggies picked up a run in the bottom half of the inning off of a TWU error. However, the big inning was the third with CU never needing to make contract with the ball. Cameron scored five of their runs off of walks with seven Aggie batters reaching due to walks; the sixth run of the inning came on a error to put CU up 8-2.
In the fourth,
Sonora Zukerman opened the inning with her 41st career homer to give the Ags a seven run lead;
Annie Combs closed out the game a inning later with her eighth homer of the season to score three.
The Aggies had nine walks with
Nikki Horton and
Paige Daino both having two hits.
Emily Wasinger (14-4) picked up the complete game win for the Aggies with two strikeouts.
The win tied a program mark for the most runs scored against a TWU squad and it is the first time CU has run-ruled the Pioneers.
Three errors in the opening frame of the nightcap quickly put the Aggies down by three to the Pioneers. Despite the rough start, Cameron loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom half of the inning with Zukerman hitting a RBI single and Daino picking up a RBI sac fly to get them within a run.
After a scoreless inning, the Aggies should have gotten out of the third without a run scored but a costly error allowed one to cross home plate, and a two RBI double put TWU up 6-2.
Cameron continued to threaten and in the fifth, Daino homered to centerfield and the Aggies cut down the TWU lead down to two off of an error. The Pioneers in the next frame took advantage of a leadoff hit by pitch to get an insurance run off of a double to move to 7-5 over the Aggies.
The Aggies put one more threat in the seventh by putting two on with one out; Horton singled to bring in one run and stole second as the winning run.
Breezy McComas walked to load the bases but the Aggies would fly out and pop up to end the game.
Cameron walked 11 times, the most since they had 12 on March 14, 2009 at home against Southeastern Oklahoma.   The Aggies had seven hits with Daino having a three RBI game.
Zukerman (6-4) went the distance with all six runs being unearned.
With the split the Aggies are now 26-13 overall and 11-7 in Lone Star Conference play; TWU goes to 24-12 and 13-5 in the LSC.
Both teams will conclude the series with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon.
