CU Volleyball drops two at South Central Classic

DURANT– The Aggies sent both of their matches into five sets but would fall in each at the South Central Classic on Saturday.

Cameron lost 3-2 to New Mexico Highlands (25-16, 25-19, 22-25, 23-25, 11-15), and 3-2 to East Central (23-25, 25-11, 25-20, 17-25, 14-16) bringing their opening weekend record to 1-3.

Against NMHU, Joseline Caraveo led the Aggies with 19 kills and Jenna Gillean added 18. Gabrielle Lerma achieved a double-double after contributing 10 kills and 22 digs.

The Aggies jumped ahead two sets over the Cowgirls putting down 16 kills in each and were boosted by a first set .538 hitting clip to start.

While Cameron also posted 16 kills in set three, NMHU would prevent the sweep by spurring several chains to stifle CU's momentum. The set knotted three times late, but a NMHU kill and Aggie attack error pushed the Cowgirls to a third set win, 25-22.

The fourth set also came down to the wire with a 23-23 tie, but NMHU knocked down back-to-back kills for the 25-23 advantage. The Cowgirls completed their comeback in set five where the Aggies never found the lead to fall 15-11.

For match two versus ECU, Gillean notched 22 kills, besting her career high by one. Lerma led with 28 digs, while Shelby Mench registered 27 assists, and Haleigh McClain-Ward was one behind her at 26.

In set one, CU chained five straight points from behind to even the Tigers at 23-23, but back-to-back ECU kills brought CU the set loss. However, ECU would struggle in the second set, hitting just .054 for the 25-11 Aggie win.

The Aggies nabbed set three, but their offense was stifled in the fourth with late attacking errors, leading to the fifth set where CU held a 14-13 advantage, but the Tigers rattled off two kills and an Aggie error brought ECU the match victory.

New Mexico Highlands is now 3-1 and East Central opened their weekend at 2-2.

Cameron will resume action on Sept. 9 at Midwestern State's tournament in Wichita Falls, Texas.
