WICHITA FALLS, Texas –
Delvonte Pierre's red hot shooting fuels the Cameron men's basketball team to a 83-74 win over their Red River rival Midwestern State on Tuesday night; Pierre had a career high 28 points to go along with 11 rebounds.
Cameron built up an 11-3 lead by the 13:25 mark, and then extended their lead to 10 with 11:13 left in the half. MSU then went on a 9-0 run to cut the Aggie lead to just one point, but followed that up with a 2:30 scoring drought as CU regained a 27-21 lead. The Mustangs turned it back around and used a 6-0 run to help take their first lead of the half at the 2:56 mark. MSU started to pull away, but back to back three pointers from Pierre cut the lead to just one as Midwestern State was up 36-35 going into the break.
Pierre had a scorching hot first half, going 7-7 from the field and 5-5 from three point range for 19 points. He also grabbed six rebounds during the first 20 minutes of play, while as a team CU shot 45.8 percent from the field, 50 percent from the perimeter, and 77.8 percent from the foul line. Shawn Nottingham led MSU at the half with 15 points.
After trading buckets to start out the second half, the Aggies used a 6-0 run to take back the lead at the 15:30 mark. They slowly started extending their lead with more small runs of 6-0 and 6-1 capped by a pair of threes from
Jordan Lewis to put CU up 62-53 with 8:16 left in the contest. Cameron was able to maintain around a 7-9 point lead for the remainder of the half, and clutch free throws helped them secure the 83-74 victory.
For the second time this season, the Aggies shot over 50 percent from the field, going 27-53, while making 10-21 from the perimeter. They also connected on 76 percent of their free throws. CU tallied a season high 22 assists and scored 17 points off of 16 MSU turnovers.
Five CU players scored in double figures with Pierre leading the way with his career high 28 points. He went 10-13 from the field, 6-8 from the perimeter, and 2-2 from the free throw line on and grabbed 11 rebounds on his way to his second double-double of the season. His 28 points was the second highest single game total in the past two years for an Aggie as
Deondre Ray had 31 in a game last season.
Additionally, CU's leading scorer on the season
Tyler Williams chipped in with 13 points, while
JV Long had 12 points, six assists, and six rebounds, and Lewis and
Elish Benjamin each chipped in 11 points, which was a career high for Lewis.
Midwestern State shot 44 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from long range, and 69.7 percent from the charity stripe. They were led by Brandon Neel, who had 19 points, while Igor Ibaka had 17 points and 11 rebounds and Nottingham had 17 points as well.
The win moves Cameron to 13-6 overall this season and 6-3 in Lone Star Conference play as they move into sole possession of fourth place in the conference standings at the halfway mark in league play. The Mustangs are now 12-5 with a 5-4 LSC record.
CU will be able to rest up and enjoy over a week off before their next contest, when they host the No. 11 Tarleton State Texans on Thursday, Jan. 26 to kick off the second half of the LSC season.
