Aggies cruise past Javelinas, 51-39

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Cameron women's basketball team cruised past Texas A&M-Kingsville 51-39 on Thursday evening to grab their second conference victory of the young season.

The Aggies used a team effort to move to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in the Lone Star Conference while delivering the Javelinas their third straight league loss as they fall to 3-7 on the year.

Cameron got off to a great start, seeing the Javelinas have the lead for just 42 seconds on their opening bucket before the Aggies took a 14 point run over six minutes to lead 18-4 in the first quarter.

By the half, CU nabbed a 31-12 advantage, limited TAMUK to just six points each period. CU shot 39 percent on the floor over the Javelina's 20 percent from the field, and the Aggies drained five three-pointers while TAMUK missed all nine attempts. Neither team went to the line in the first half.

Team rebounds nearly matched the score at halftime as CU grabbed 31 boards to their 13 rebounds.

The closest Cameron let the Javelinas get in the second half was 12 points despite TAMUK outscoring CU in the final quarters. The Javelinas finally made their first shots from beyond the arc, making 3-of-19 for just 15 percent from deep and 25 percent from the field.

Cameron finished the game with six treys on 27 percent shooting from downtown and 36 percent on the floor. CU only went to the stripe in the third quarter, making 3-of-6 at the line. The Javelinas did not see the line much themselves, making 4-of-5 in the low scoring contest.

The Aggies won the battle at the glass, out rebounding TAMUK 51 to 32. The Javelinas did double CU in steals with 10 takeaways but only tallied six points off 19 Aggie turnovers. TAMUK tied for a season low 11 turnovers, which is the amount they committed on Nov. 24 versus Oklahoma Christian.

Amaka Nwakamma, Jamie Bonnarens and Parfitt McNair each scored 11 points for CU. McNair added ten boards for her first career double-double. Lejha Smith led the team with 11 rebounds and four assists.

Angelica Wilson led the Javelinas with 11 points and ten rebounds herself.

Cameron continues LSC action at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Angelo State.
