Softball falls to No. 6 Lady Buffs in doubleheader

LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron Aggie softball team struggled to keep up with No. 6 West Texas A&M offense as they put 28 runs on the board in a doubleheader sweep on Saturday; WT won 12-2 and 16-1 and take the three game series two games to one.

On the day, the Lady Buffs tallied 31 hits with 11 in game one and 20 more in the second game. Cameron was held to just three runs and 11 hits in the two games.

In game one, WT got two runs in the first, which CU responded to with a run of their own on a Paige Daino RBI groundout. However, two five run innings in the second and fourth innings for the West Texas opened up their lead to 12-1. The Aggies got one back in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Annie Combs, but the deficit would be two large as the Lady Buffs got the 10-run-rule victory.

WT started off game two hot, scoring five runs in the opening half inning of play. Cameron responded in the bottom of the inning on a Brenna Busby homer, which would plate the only run of the game for the Aggies. The Lady Buffs put four runs up in the second, three in the third, and four more in the fifth to secure another run-rule win.

Shayne Starkey pitched all five innings of the first game and two more in the second for WT. She gave up just the three earned runs and eight hits. Alexis Alfonso got her ninth win of the season as she pitched the final three innings of game two, giving up no runs on three hits.

Kaytlyn Kizarr, B. Busby, Daino, and Kaylyn Smith each had two hits for CU, with B. Busby scoring two of Cameron's runs.

Ashley Hardin had six hits, six runs scored, and eight RBI on the day for the Lady Buffs, while Shea Ibrahim had six hits and five RBI.

Cameron is now 29-15 overall this season and 17-6 in league play, while West Texas is now 34-7 overall and 19-5 in LSC games. They now lead CU for second in the conference standings by 1.5 games.

The Aggies will travel to Silver City, N.M. for their next series as they visit new conference foe Western New Mexico for three games, April 21-22.
