SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Cameron University softball team were eliminated from postseason play after falling in a high-scoring 14-11 loss to Lubbock Christian on Friday afternoon.
The Aggies got off to a fast start against the Lady Chaps, scoring three runs on three hits in the top of the first.
Callie Busby started it off by driving in
Paige Daino on a single to right.
Brenna Busby, who singled earlier in the inning, took home on a double steal to put CU up by two. Cameron took a 3-0 lead as C. Busby came in to score on an infield grounder by
Kaylyn Smith.
After LCU cut into the lead on a two run homer in the bottom of the first, the Aggie struck for six runs in the second to extend their lead to 9-2. Two straight singles and a fielder's choice loaded the bases for
Breezy McComas to lead off the inning. McComas then walked and B. Busby hit a sacrifice fly to put the first two runs on the board. The third, fourth, and fifth runs came on back-to-back doubles from
Abbey Warren and K. Smith.
Kaytlyn Kizarr capped off the inning by driving in K. Smith on a single up the middle.
Cameron looked to have the game put away as they scored a run in the top of the third to make it 10-3, but the Lady Chaps had other ideas as they scored four runs in the fourth and six runs in the fourth to take a 13-10 lead.
The Aggies cut into that lead a bit in the top of the sixth, as Kizarr doubled to drive in K. Smith, but LCU responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning, going up 14-11.
The Lady Chaps would retire CU in the seventh to get the win.
Alyssa Osterdock (8-12) got the loss as she pitched the final three innings, giving up two earned runs on four hits.
Annie Combs had three hits and a run scored for CU, while B. Busby and Kizarr each had two hits and two RBI and C. Busby had two hits as well.
Cameron finishes the season with a 33-20 record, while Lubbock Christian moves to 40-18 overall and will face Colorado Mesa later this evening.
