LAWTON – The Cameron women's basketball team fell short 59-57 against Texas Woman's on Saturday afternoon.
Lejha Smith earned her sixth double-double of the season in the loss, recording 15 points and 10 boards to lead the Aggies. She also had four blocks.
Ava Battese followed up with 12 points, and
Parfitt McNair rounded out the Aggies in the double figures with 11 points. McNair and
Amaka Nwakamma each had three assists.
Leading TWU was Alexis Nezianya who recorded a double-double on 16 points and 11 rebounds.
TWU used an 11-2 run in the final minutes of the first half to lead the Aggies 28-25 at the break after shooting 40 percent to CU's 34 percent. Battese drained three of CU's four treys in the half. CU went 2 for 4 at the line and TWU 7 for 13.
In the third period TWU took their largest lead of 11 points by scoring nine unanswered points, 39-28. CU put up a good run to start the fourth period, taking a 9-1 chain to trail by one possession.
With 1:54 to go, Battese drained a three-pointer to tie the game at 55. At the 30 second marker Nwakamma hit both free throws putting CU up 57-56 for their first lead since 4:16 of the second quarter.
TWU's Nezianya threw in a layup with 20 seconds left and with single digits remaining on the clock, CU's game-winning attempt skimmed the rim, and the Aggies fouled on the rebound where the Pioneers made 1 of 2, for the 59-57 lead and win as time expired.
CU is now 7-11 overall and 5-5 in the Lone Star Conference. TWU is 7-9 overall and 4-6 in the league.
