Cameron falls in four set battle against TWU

LAWTON, Okla. -- The Cameron University volleyball team lost a hard fought battle on Tuesday night, falling to Texas Woman's 3-1 at the Aggie Gym.

The Aggies matched TWU in aces (5) and total blocks (11), but hit just .092 as a team with 43 kills, while the Pioneers racked up 58 kills on a .151 attack percentage.

Paige Dixon led the Black and Gold with 11 kills on a .167 hitting percentage, while Ashleigh McFatridge chipped in 10 on a .308 clip, and freshman Shantalle Demirjian had seven. Katherine Manning and Bailee Smith combined for 36 assists for CU, while on the defensive side of things, Brittnee Altic had a match high 31 digs and Brandy Carr had eight blocks to lead the Aggies.

Set one did not go Cameron's way at all. The team hit in the negatives on the attack with just six kills. The Pioneers ran away with the set win after using a 7-0 run to go up 11 points at 17-6. From there they surged to a 25-12 victory.

The Aggies responded with a strong second set in which they bounced back from an early deficit, thanks to a few small rallies, to win 25-19 and tie the match at one set a piece.

In the third, TWU looked like they had gained back their momentum, using a 9-1 stretch to build up a 10 point lead. However, CU answered with nine straight to cut the lead to one and then after Texas Woman's got a point back, responded with two more to tie the set at 17. The two teams then traded four point runs to set the score at 22-21, before trading points to tie the game again, this time at 24. Unfortunately for the CU faithful, TWU got a pair of kills to take the set 26-24.

Cameron continued their fight into the fourth set, battling back and forth with their opponents throughout the set. After CU took a 19-18 lead on a Dixon kill, TWU answered with four straight to take a three point lead. The Aggies then outscored TWU 4-1 in the next five plays to even the score at 23 points. Texas Woman's went to set point on another kill in the next play, but Cameron answered right back with kills from Manning and Brittany Lawson to force their own set point. The Pioneers then scored three straight to put a cap on the match with a 27-25 win.

Courtney Noel led TWU with 13 kills in the match, while Katy Ranes had a double-double with 52 assists and 12 digs.

The Aggies fall to 2-19 on the season with their 12th straight loss, while moving to 0-11 in Lone Star Conference play. Texas Woman's is now 13-8 overall and 5-6 in league matches.

Cameron volleyball will be back on the road this upcoming weekend as they travel to Eastern New Mexico on Friday, Oct. 12, and West Texas A&M on Saturday, Oct. 13 for a pair of tough LSC matches.
