LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron men's basketball team exploded for 61 points during a second-half comeback win over Lubbock Christian on Saturday to notch their third win of the season.
The Aggies found themselves down by 12 at halftime, after shooting just 33.3 percent from the floor and going 3-11 from three and 2-5 from the free throw line during the first 20 minutes of play. On the other side of the court, their opposition was on fire, hitting 60 percent of their shots from the floor, while shooting 45.5 percent from the perimeter and 80 percent from the foul line. They also blocked six of CU's shots and held a 21-14 advantage on the glass.
Brennan Fowler led LCU at the break with 12 points, while Jay Workman and Isaac Asrat each had seven. Cameron was led by
Johann Tate, who made a pair of threes to give him six points, with
Tyus Momoh,
Jordan Lewis, and
Kendall Scott each adding four. One thing going for CU was their ball control, as they had just six turnovers compared to the Chaps' 10, with six of those coming via Aggie steals.
In the second half, the Black and Gold stepped up the defensive intensity even more and after a 7-0 run fueled by a Momoh steal and old fashion three-point play, the LCU lead was just four with 15:14 to play. Asrat hit a three to put his team back up by seven, but Cameron's run kept going as they went on an 11-2 run to take a 51-49 lead, their first since early in the first half, with 12:36 to play. LCU hit a pair of free throws to end that run, but Cameron did not slow up, going on a 10-2 run, fueled by a pair of threes from
Brock Schreiner to put the home team up by eight with just under 10 minutes left in the half. The Aggies held their strong lead throughout the rest of the frame, answering every Lubbock blow with one of their own to earn the 88-77 win.
The Aggies scored 61 points while shooting 52.9 percent from the floor, 44.4 percent from three, and 84 percent from the foul line in the second half. They also forced 11 LCU turnover, nine of which came on steals; Cameron finished the game with a season-high 13 steals.
Zach Dumas and Momoh led the Aggies with 17 points each, with Momoh recording three steals and five assists, and Dumas coming one steal shy of the CU record with seven; 28 of the seniors' 34 combined points came in the second half. Schreiner ended the game with a career-best 13 points, all of which came in the final 20 minutes, while Scott added 12 and Lewis finished with 11 points.
Lubbock Christian shot just over 47 percent from the field with 10 made threes for the game. They also had 21 turnovers but managed to collect 11 blocked shots as a team. Fowler ended the day with 22 points, 10 boards, and six blocks, while Workman added 15 points and Asrat had 10.
