Strong second half powers Aggies to win over MSU

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Cameron women's basketball team outscored Midwestern State 35-21 in the second half to take down their Red River rival 69-55 on Tuesday night. They are now 2-0 against the Mustangs this season.

Amaka Nwakamma led the balanced attack against the Mustangs, scoring 17 points on 8-14 shooting from the floor. Jamie Bonnarens had 15 points while going 7-8 from the free from three line, while Parfitt McNair had 11 points.

CU's post players put in a strong effort, as Jazmin Luster set a career high with 11 points, going 5-5 from the field, and Lejha Smith chipped in seven points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Smith also had four blocks and three steals, while Bonnarens chipped in four steals in the win.

As a team, the Aggies shot 40 percent from the field, going just 3-11 from the perimeter and hitting on 63.6 percent of their foul shots. CU also dominated the paint, outscoring MSU 40-20 down low, while also winning the fast-break battle 15-6. Most of those points came after one of the Black and Gold's 13 steals.

After scoring the first bucket of the game on a layup by Nwakamma, the Aggies went cold, going 0-10 from the floor and not making their second shot until the 1:31 mark. However they stayed in the game by going 6-8 from the free throw line and trailed by just three at the end of the first.

The second quarter was back and forth with eight ties in the 10 minutes of play. CU ended the half the same way they started it, with a layup from Nwakamma to tie the game up at 34 points apiece heading into the break.

Cameron pulled away from the Mustangs in the third quarter, using a 12-1 run to build a 50-40 lead. However, The Aggies finished up the quarter going just 1-7, letting MSU cut the deficit to just seven, 52-45, at the end of the third.

The fourth quarter started with a MSU scoring drought and a 7-0 CU run. Cameron carried that momentum throughout the final quarter and maintained their big lead, winning 69-55.

Midwestern State was led by Kristen Rydell, who had 12 points, as they move to 13-12 on the season and 10-9 in Lone Star Conference play, while the Aggies are also now 10-9 in league play and 12-15 overall. The two teams are tied for sixth in the conference standings, but CU owns the tiebreaker as they swept the season series against MSU.

Cameron will play their regular season finale on Thursday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. as they visit Texas Woman's. The Black and Gold lost to the Pioneers by two points when they played in Lawton earlier this season.
