LAWTON – The Cameron women's basketball team fought through three overtimes to defeat Texas A&M-Kingsville 92-91 on Saturday afternoon.
Both the Aggies and Javelinas had a rough first half as both sides shot just 28 percent from the field and were locked in a 30-30 tie at the break. TAMUK had the edge in rebounding, 25 to 17, and were helped by 13 for 15 shooting at the line.
CU kept in contention with six treys to TAMUK's one.
While Cameron committed no turnovers in the third period their shooting didn't back them up as they made just three buckets, missed five tries beyond the arc and went 8 for 13 at the line. The Javelinas outscored them 15-14 that quarter to nab a 45-44 edge.
CU trailed by as much as two possessions for almost the entirety of the fourth quarter. At the 1:38 marker,
Andrea Martinez drilled a trey and on the defensive side CU forced a TAMUK shot clock violation.
Back in possession,
Ava Battese made her third three-pointer to tie the game at 61-all. Both sides missed their game winning shot sending the contest into overtime.
In the first overtime, Cameron did a good job at grabbing offensive boards and put up at six point run, but the Javelinas drained a three-pointer to tie it back up at 67-all. Two buckets later the game went into a second overtime on a 69-69 tie.
CU trailed with ten seconds in double OT as
Amaka Nwakamma knotted it for the Ags with two good free throws. Down the court,
Parfitt McNair tipped a pass and Battese stole the ball ahead of the third overtime.
In triple overtime, the Aggies chained a 10-2 run to lead by eight points; however, the Javelina's Brynae Thompson hit back-to-back deep balls inching her team back in the game with under 30 seconds to go before the free throw game took over.
CU held a one possession lead with 13 seconds left when
Jamie Bonnarens and Nwakamma forced a clutch jump ball in favor of the Aggie's possession. McNair made 1 of 2 at the line, and with four seconds remaining TAMUK drained a three making it 92-91 CU.
A loose ball occurred in the paint but luckily for the Aggies time expired for the Cameron win.
Bonnarens and McNair led with 20 points each.
Lejha Smith nabbed a double-double on 12 points and 13 rebounds. Nwakamma recorded 17 points, and Battese added 13 points with four steals. McNair led with seven assists.
For TAMUK, Angelica Wilson led with 31 points and 17 rebounds, with Sadie Russell backing her for 16 points and 15 boards.
Cameron is now 9-13 and 7-7 in the Lone Star Conference. TAMUK is 6-16 and 3-11 in the league.
