LAWTON – The Cameron men fought a pair of double digit deficits in the second half to take the game into overtime with No. 8 West Texas A&M, but a cold 18 percent from the floor in OT proved to be the Ags undoing as they fell 103-93 to the Buffs on Thursday night.
The Aggies struggled in overtime not making a basket until 1:44 was left on the clock. They shot just 18 percent in the extra time and made just 3 of 14 from the perimeter.
Meanwhile, the Buffs built their lead back to ten with 50 percent shooting to win the game and move to 21-2 and 11-2 in the Lone Star Conference, and the Aggies drop to 9-14 overall and 5-9 in the league.
JV Long led Cameron with 22 points among five Aggies in double digit scoring.
Tyler Williams scored 15 points,
Johann Tate 13 points, while
Tyus Momoh and
Delano Jones added 12 each. Long had a team best five assists.
David Chavolvich and Gach Gach led the Buffs with 21 points each. Gaige Prim notched a double-double on 16 points and 15 boards as did Ryan Quaid with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
The free throw line aided the Buffs in the first half as they shot 14 for 15 from the stripe including a stretch where they made six and drilled a trey to take an 11 point advantage, 43-32. WT kept CU off the line for the most part, 4 for 6, and outrebounded them 23 to 12 in that time.
With under a minute until the break,
Zach Dumas drained a three-pointer and on defense CU forced a turnover that Long took down the court on the fastbreak to lessen the deficit to 48-41 at the half.
Cameron shot 48 percent on the floor while making seven three-pointers, and the Buffs shot 43 percent with eight treys.
In the second half CU faced a pair of ten point deficits and remained behind for the entirety of the second half. With under four minutes, the Ags put together a six point run to inch within one possession using 47 percent shooting.
After four free throws by WT, the Aggies were at it again this time with a seven point chain as Jones started it with a trey. Dumas stripped the ball at halfcourt and dished it to Long who made it a two point game with a layup.
With 30 seconds remaining, WT's Chavolich charged and fouled out of the game, and now back in possession Long tied the game at 84-84. Gach missed the game winning trey sending the game into overtime.
At the end of regulation, WT had outrebounded the Aggies 42 to 27.
In overtime the Buffs outscored CU 19-9, winning the game 103-93.
