LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron University softball team irrupted for 27 runs on 27 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Southwestern Oklahoma State on Wednesday, winning 12-4 and 15-0 in a pair of five inning contests.
A variety of players had great days against the Bulldogs.
Madyson Marvulli had four hits, two homeruns, and drove in six runs to lead the Black and Gold, while
Kaitlyn Alvarado had a team best five hits and scored three runs.
Makaylah Ramirez,
Brenna Busby,
Callie Busby, and
Annie Combs each had three hits, as B. Busby led Cameron with five runs scored while also hitting a pair of homers.
The one blemish on the day for the Aggies came in the first inning of game one, when SWOSU's first baseman Sidney Kirk hit a grandslam to put them up 4-0. From there, it was all Aggies. B. Busby led off the CU half of the first with a solo homer, as Both
Bethany Hines and
Alyssa Osterdock walked with the bases loaded later in the inning to cut the deficit to one run.
In the third, Marvulli hit her first homer of the day to tie the game and then in the fourth, C. Busby hit a two run homer and Combs had a RBI double to left to put CU up 7-4. Cameron then put up a five spot in the fifth to earn the 12-4 run-rule win. Ramirez drove in two on a single up the middle and then Alvarado, Marvulli, and Hines each recorded an RBI.
Besides the first inning homer,
Rylee Willmon pitched well for the Black and Gold, scattering just two hits over the final four innings to earn her 10th win of the season.
In game two, Cameron hit the run-rule mark in the first inning. B. Busby started the scoring off by coming in on a wild pitch, and then her sister drove in Ramirez on a single to center. Marvulli then came up and hit her second homer of the day, a three run shot to deep left field. Two batters later, Combs hit a solo shot to left and then to cap off the inning B. Busby added her second bomb, driving in two runs to give CU the 8-0 lead.
The Aggies went on to score five runs in the third inning, and then two more in the fourth in the 15-0 rout.
Hines would have just needed one of those runs with how she was pitching against the Bulldogs. The sophomore earned her eighth win with a four inning, two hit, and five strikeout performance. Alvarado saw her first action of her collegiate career in the circle as she came in to pitch the fifth inning; she walked one batter and struck out one.
The two wins improve Cameron to 19-9 on the year and more importantly shows that the Aggie offense can strike for some big inning on offense. They will need to carry that momentum into next week as they host Central Oklahoma in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, March 27.
