KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Aggie softball team closed out a three game series at Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday, beating the Javelinas 4-2 behind a strong outing from
Bethany Hines.
Cameron jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after
Abbey Warren drove in Hines in the second inning on a two out double down the leftfield line. In the next inning,
Callie Busby gave the Aggies a 2-0 lead with an RBI double of her own, driving in
Kaylyn Smith.
After the Javelinas answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the third, CU responded with a pair of insurance runs via a two run homer off the bat of
Raley Long. Long's first homer of the season put the Black and God on top 4-1.
Hines held the opposition scoreless through the next three innings, but in the seventh, TAMUK threatened to get back in the game, scoring a run on an RBI double of their own. However, CU's sophomore pitcher was able to strike out the next batter and get the final Javelina hitter to groundout to secure the 4-2 win.
Hines gave up just three hits and one earned run in her seven innings of work while striking out six opposing batters. Warren reached base safely all three times she came to the plate, while tallying a team best two hits, as Long had the two RBI on her homer in the fourth.
The series finale victory gives the Aggies their 20th win of the season as they are now 20-11 overall and 10-8 in Lone Star Conference play; Texas A&M-Kingsville is now 19-19 and 9-12 in league games.
Cameron will next play Oklahoma Christian in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 3 beginning at 2 p.m. before hosting Eastern New Mexico for a three game slate next weekend.
