CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Aggie women's tennis team recorded their second sweep of the day as they took down Tarleton State 5-0 in the semifinal of the Lone Star Conference Championship on Friday night.
After beating Western New Mexico 5-0 in the opening round of the tournament, the No. 19 Aggies were set to take on TSU, who was the three seed, to see who would advance to the LSC Championship Final on Saturday.
The Black and Gold did what they did in the first match and started out with three big wins in doubles play.
Rebeka Velasova and
Melany Opolz were the first to finish as they won 8-1 in the No. 3 spot, while both the No. 1 pairing of
Zhenia Shviadok and
Mathilde Thibaudat and the No. 2 doubles team of
Sarah Frendo and
Sara Petric defeated their Tarleton counterparts 8-5.
Cameron needed just two wins in singles to advance to the final and Frendo and Velasova delivered. Velasova swept her opponent at No. 6, winning 6-0, 6-0, as Frendo, playing in the No. 3 spot, won her match 6-1, 6-1.
The Aggies will face off against Midwestern State, who beat Texas A&M-Kingsville in the other semifinal, in the conference championship on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. Just a few weeks ago, CU visited the Mustangs and fell 7-2; MSU was the regular season LSC Champion.
