CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Aggie men's tennis team battled in a hard fought contest against top-seeded Midwestern State in the Lone Star Conference Championship Final on Saturday, but fell to the Mustangs 5-4.
The No. 44 ranked Aggies led 2-1 after doubles play, as
Przemyslaw Zielinski and
Vinicius Santos beat the No. 11 ranked duo of Nolan McCaig and Dillon Pineda 9-7 at No. 1 and
Julien Aubry-Damon and
Mateo Velasco took down No. 24 Angel Palacios and Alex Martinez Roca 8-6 at No. 2. The one doubles loss for CU came at No. 2, where
Julen Gutierrez and
Stefan Svicevic fell to their MSU counterpart 8-3.
In singles, the Mustangs were the first to get on the board and tie the match up with a win at No. 6 as Svicevic fell 6-2, 6-1. They then took the lead 3-2 as Aubry-Damon fell at No. 5 6-0, 7-6. Cameron got back in it with a 7-5, 6-4 win from Velasco at No. 4. The two teams then split the two and three matches with CU's Santos winning 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 at No. 2 and Gutierrez falling 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3, leaving it up to the No. 1 match two decide the tournament champion.
At the top spot, No. 20 Zielinski went up against No. 12 Vasudev Vijayaraman, who he lost two in two sets earlier this month. This time around, Zielinski fell behind with a 6-3 loss in the first set, but responded for a 6-3 win in the second set. The two battled back and forth in the third and final set, but it would be Vijayaraman who would win 7-5 to win his team the championship.
Cameron, who is now 9-11 this spring, found themselves out of the NCAA South Central Regional rankings when it was released earlier this week, which means it would seem their season has finished barring a dramatic change of events.
The NCAA Division II men's tennis selection show will air at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 24. Â
