Cameron's season ends with 5-3 loss to MSU at South Central Regional

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The No. 20 ranked Cameron University women's tennis team closed out their season with a 5-3 loss to #12 Midwestern State in the first round of the NCAA Division II Tournament on Saturday.

In the third matchup between the Aggies and Mustangs this season, MSU seemed to have a commanding 3-0 lead after doubles play, winning all three matches convincingly. The first doubles battle was at No. 3, as Melany Opolz and Rebeka Velasova lost to their Mustang Counterpart 8-0, followed by the No. 11 ranked duo of Zhenia Shviadok and Mathilde Thibaudat falling to No. 8 Maddy Coffman and Ashley Ramirez 8-1 at No. 1. The closest of the three matches came at No. 2, but the duo of Sarah Frendo and Sara Petric still lost to their MSU opponent 8-2.

Down by three, Cameron started all singles play strong, as both Velasova and Petric won their matches at No. 6 and No. 5 6-0, 6-0. MSU answered with a win at No. 4 to in two sets to go up 4-2 in the match.

That 2-1 start in favor of the Black and Gold left the top three battles left to finish, with all three going to a third set. Thibaudat got revenge on Bianca Duff, who beat her in the Lone Star Conference Championship match, recovering from a set one loss to beat the No. 58 ranked player 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) to get the Aggies back to within one.

The deciding match ended up coming at No. 1, as No. 18 Shvidaok fell to No. 30 Coffman 5-7, 7-5, 7-5, allowing the Mustangs to advance to the next round of the tournament.

Cameron finishes the season with a 16-8 record, including a 0-3 mark against the Mustangs, who move to 18-6 on the year.
