Softball falls 4-0 in South Central Regional opener

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Aggie softball team failed to produce offensively, as they lost 4-0 to No. 10 West Texas A&M in the opening game of the NCAA Division II South Central Regional 2 on Thursday afternoon.

Cameron struggled at the plate for the second straight game, recording just three hits in the seven inning contest. Their first hit came to lead off the fourth as Brenna Busby doubled off the WT pitcher's leg, but CU was unable to bring her around to score. The second hit came in the sixth when Kaylyn Smith single to center field, but a double-play in the next at bat quickly erased that threat. CU's final hit came in the seventh inning on a two out pinch hit single by Carly Johnson.

The Aggies were able to escape a couple of big innings in both the first and the fourth innings. In the first, a leadoff double from WT's Ashley Hardin to put a runner in scoring position from the start. However, Hardin would be the only runner to reach base in the inning, as she scored on a sacrifice fly two batters later.

After scoreless second and third innings, the Lady Buffs loaded the bases with one out in the fourth, but only one run came across to score on another sacrifice fly as B. Busby made an incredible diving stop to end the inning and get CU out of trouble.

West Texas A&M did finally record a multi-run inning in the sixth, as two runs came across to score on a Shea McBroom single to left center to give WT a 4-0 lead.

Rylee Willmon received the loss for CU, giving up four runs on nine hits with three strikeouts. Kilee Halbert was the winning pitcher for WT as she struck out five in the three hit, complete game shutout.

Cameron will now await the loser of the Angelo State/Colorado Christian matchup later tonight to see who they will face in the elimination game on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
