LAWTON, Okla. -- The Cameron University volleyball team battled Southwestern Oklahoma State and the electricity on Tuesday night as they fell in their home opener 3-1.
Three points into the fourth set, CU fans got an unexpected delay, as all of the lights in the Aggie Gym went off for about 30 minutes. Prior to that, Cameron had just gained the momentum in the match, bouncing back from losses in set one (25-18) and two (25-23), with a 9-1 run to close out the set 25-23.
After that is when the lights went out. However the delay did not face Cameron, as they opened up the set with a 5-1 lead. SWOSU rallied right back, going on a 7-1 stretch to go up 8-6. The two teams traded points throught the middle of the set and after falling behind by two, the Aggies used a four point run, fueled by two
Paige Dixon kills to take a 22-20 lead. The Bulldogs took over from there as they scored four straight to win the set 25-23 and the match.
Cameron hit over .230 in all but the first set, giving them a match percentage of .209 with 56 kills. On the defensive side, the Aggies had 9 blocks and 78 digs.
Dixon led CU with 16 kills, while
Amarachi Iwunze had a career high 13 kills and
Bristol Lewis had 10.
Katherine Manning had a career game with 26 assists and 19 digs, as
Brittnee Altic added 10 assists and 17 digs and
Kirsten Evans had 18 assists.
SWOSU was led by Elizabeth McVicker, who had 18 kills, while Allie Hoang had 49 assists and 13 digs.
Cameron is now 1-4 on the season. They will compete in the Pittsburg State Classic this upcoming weekend where they open up with Northwestern Oklahoma State at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 31.
