Aggies fall in straight sets to No. 25 Lions


COMMERCE, Texas -- The Cameron University volleyball team suffered a three set road loss to No. 25 Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday night.

CU's offense could not get going against the top-25 ranked Lions, recording an attack percentage in the negatives and just 15 kills in the three set match. They had nine total blocks as a team, as they held the prolific TAMUC offense to hitting under .200.

Paige Dixon led the Black and Gold with four kills, while Bristol Lewis had three and four others chipped in two. Sophomore Jazmin Luster had five total blocks in the match, and Brandy Carr added four to the defensive effort. Additionally, Brittnee Altic had a match-high 13 digs and Katherine Manning led CU with nine assists.

Cameron opened up the match on a 3-0 run, but TAMUC scored six straight to take their first lead of the match. They held that momentum throughout the rest of the set, outscoring 19-7 to earn the big 25-10 win.

Set two was back and forth with the Aggie using small runs to keep the score close. The Lions tried to break away halfway through the frame, going on an 8-2 run to build up a 19-12 lead. Cameron responded with an 7-1 rally to get to within two points. TAMUC then scored three straight to retake a four point lead, before CU erased that lead with two straight to set the score at 23-21. However, the Lions put the cap on th 25-21 set win with a kill by Jaryn Wacker and an ace by Savannah Rutledge.

The final set started out close, with Cameron tying the match at four all and five all. Texas A&M-Commerce then took over and outscored CU 20-9 to earn the three set sweep.

Cameron is now 2-13 overall this season and 0-5 in Lone Star Conference play after their sixth straight loss, as TAMUC moves to 11-4 overall and 3-2 in league play.

The Aggies will finish off their four match road stretch on Saturday as they take on Texa Woman's at 2 p.m. in Denton, Texas.
