Dixon strong in CU loss to ASU


LAWTON, Okla. -- Senior outside hitter Paige Dixon had a match-high 16 kills on a .552 attack percentage in Cameron's 3-1 loss to Angelo State on Saturday afternoon.

Dixon, who leads the team with 175 kills on the season, played an integral part in CU's offensive attack against the Rambelles. The team totaled 46 attacks and hit .215 in the four set match. The Aggies also recorded eight service aces and 10 total blocks, while ASU had 10 aces and seven team blocks.

Brandy Carr also had a strong match, totaling 12.5 points with 10 kills and four blocks. Katherine Manning led CU with 24 assists, with Bailee Smith chipping in 13, while on the defensive side of things, Brittnee Altic had a match-high 21 digs and Jazmin Luster matched Carr with four blocks as well.

Both teams were on their game in the first set, as they combined for 17 kills and just six errors. The lead changed hands multiple times until CU took a small 13-10 lead thanks to a 4-0 run. After trading points, the Rambelles made their move, going on a 5-1 run to take a 19-18 lead. Cameron tied the match at 19, but ASU would go on to outscore the Aggies 6-2 to earn the 25-21 set win.

The second set started off with both the two teams trading blows in the form of five point rallies. ASU was first, taking an 11-7 lead, but CU answered right back to go on top 12-11. The turning point came at 20-17 when Shantalle Demirjian got a kill to spark a 6-0 run, making it 23-20. ASU did not go easily though,  responding with a 5-1 stretch to take a 25-24 lead. The Black and Gold then closed out the set with a 4-1 stretch to win 28-26 and tie the match.

Cameron struggled in set three, hitting just .029 on the attack. The frame started out close, but ASU started to pull away mid-way through thanks to a 7-1 run. The Aggies mounted a small comeback, scoring four straight points to set the score at 19-16, but the Belles held them off for the 25-19 win.

Like the rest of the match, the fourth set was a battle, with neither team giving any ground. Cameron was strong on the attack again, hitting .259 with 11 kills, but ASU out hit them with a .364 percentage and 17 kills. After trading scores throughout most of the set, Angelo State started to pull away via a 4-0 stretch, eventually winning the match on a kill from Sundara Chinn.

ASU was led on the attack by Baleigh Allen and Audrey Fragniere, who had 15 and 14 kills respectively, while setter Meghan Parker recorded a monster double-double with 52 assists and 10 digs.

The loss is CU's ninth in a row, giving them a 2-16 overall record and an 0-8 Lone Star Conference mark, while ASU moves to 14-4 on the season and 7-1 in league play.

Cameron will have a quick turnaround before their next match, as they visit Midwestern State on Tuesday, Oct. 2 at 5:30 p.m. They will then host Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday, Oct. 5.
