Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cameron overpowered by No. 19 ASU

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Cameron women's basketball team could not overcome a slow start against No. 19 Angelo State on Thursday, falling 89-54 in the Lone Star Conference road contest.

Cameron's struggles began early, with the Rambelles opening up the game on an 11-2 run. ASU continued to stay hot, shooting 50 percent from the field in the first quarter, while the Black and Gold was just 2-11 from the field and 0-6 from the perimeter in the opening frame to trail 21-7.

The Aggies started to hit some shots in the second quarter, but they could not keep up with the Belles shooting as the home team hit 56.3 percent of their shots in the frame. Cameron nearly doubled their field goal percentage from the opening period, but still just shot 26.7 percent from the field to trail 43-18 at the break.

Parfitt McNair had half of CU's points at halftime, while as a team, they shot just 23.1 percent from the floor, 9.1 percent from three, and hit five of their eight free throw attempts. Cameron was outrebounded 22-11 and ASU dominated inside with 20 points in the paint. They were led by De'Anira Moore, who had 10 points in the first 20 minutes of play.

To start the third quarter, Cameron went on a 10-4 to cut the deficit down to 18, but an 11-3 stretch from the Belles stretched their lead back out to 28 by the end of the third quarter. The Aggies shot one percent better than ASU in the third frame, going 2-3 from the perimeter and 2-4 from the foul line.

In the final frame, CU could not get any closer to the red-hot Rambelles, who ended the game shooting 50 percent from the field in the fourth quarter. On the other side of the court, the Black and Gold was just 7-19 from the field, including a 0-6 mark from long range. That allowed Angelo State to build up their lead to 35 and come away with the 89-54 win.

McNair finished the game with a team-high 16 points, while Maighan Hedge scored 13, 11 in the second half alone. As a team, Cameron shot 32.8 percent from the floor while going 3-20 from three and 11-18 from the charity stripe.

Four Belles reached double-figures, with Marquita Daniels and Dezirae Hampton leading the way with 15 points each and Moore adding 14 and Asia Davis chipping in 13 points.

The loss drops CU's record to 6-11 overall and 3-6 in Lone Star Conference play, while Angelo State, who is tops in the LSC standings, is now 13-2 and 8-1 against conference opponents.

Next up for the Aggies will be a trip to Kingsville, Texas to take on the Javelinas on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 2 p.m.
