Game Recap: Volleyball |

Navarrete and Demirjian total 10 kills each in loss at DBU

DALLAS, Texas – The Cameron University volleyball team lost their fifth straight match as they dropped a three-set contest at Dallas Baptist University on Saturday.

Despite 10 kill performances from Arianna Navarrete and Shantalle Demirjian, the Aggies totaled just 38 kills as a team with a .196 attack percentage, which was over-shadowed by DBU's .300 hitting percentage. The Black and Gold also recorded four service aces and 10 total blocks in the loss.

Navarrete and Demirjian led the way for CU with 10 kills each, with the sophomore Demirjian hitting .412 with only three attack errors. Desiree Marmolejo provided an 18 assist, six dig performance, while her fellow setter Katherine Manning added 12 assists and seven digs. Additionally, Kirsten Evans recorded a team-high 14 digs with Peyton Little chipping in 11.

In the first, the Aggies led for most of the frame, including by four points multiple times. However, DBU made a late surge, using an 8-3 run to take a 24-22 lead. CU kept the set alive with a kill by Riana Blount and a block by Navarrete and Maya Hill, but the Lady Patriots answered with a pair of kills from Brooke Clark to earn the 26-24 win.

Cameron hung around for most of the second, tying the frame at 12 on a Jillian Wright kill. A 6-1 DBU stretch gave them a four-point advantage, which they added to later with a 5-0 run to end the set, 25-16.

The Lady Patriots looked like they were primed to run away with the third set, taking a 12-5 lead early. Cameron slowly chipped away at the lead and used a 4-0 run capped by a Demirjian kill that got the score to 20-19. That would be as close as CU would get, as DBU finished off the match on a 5-2 stretch to secure the 25-21 set victory.

Cameron now sits at 4-10 overall this season and 1-5 in Lone Star Conference play. They will get a short break from league action on Tuesday, Oct. 8, as they host East Central, who they beat earlier this season in three sets.
