COMMERCE, Texas – The Cameron volleyball team fell in another Lone Star Conference division match on Saturday, falling to No. 23 A&M-Commerce in three sets.
In their second loss to the ranked Lions this season, the Aggies struggled on both offense and defense, totaling just 3.0 total blocks and hitting .186 on the attack. They were able to notch four service aces, but lost that battle as well, as A&M-Commerce had seven aces from the service line.
Offensively,
Shantalle Demirjian and
Walia Franklin each had five kills, with Demijian hitting .417 with no errors. Setters
Desiree Marmolejo and
Katherine Manning combined for 17 assists and two aces, while
Sarah Wright had CU's other two other points from the service line. Additionally,
Peyton Little recorded a team-best seven digs while
Kendyl Payne and Wright each had a CU-high 2.0 blocks.
The Lions took over the match early in the first, opening up with an 8-3 advantage. CU came back to get to within three a few points later, but the A&M-Commerce offense was too powerful as they pulled back out to a nine point lead and won the set 25-16.
Cameron kept it close early in the second set, but three and four point runs by the Lions gave them a comfortable lead that they would carry into a 25-16 win in the set to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third and closest set, the two teams traded points early as they matches 4-0 runs to tie the frame at 10-all. A few plays later, the Aggies scored five straight to take a 15-11 lead over the top team in the division. A&M-Commerce answered later in the set with a 5-0 stretch of their own to take back the lead at 19-17. CU went back and forth with the Lions down the stretch, but ultimately fell 25-22 to lose the match in three sets.
The loss drops Cameron to 6-19 overall this season with a 2-12 Lone Star Conference mark and a 1-7 division record. They will host UT Permian Basin and Western New Mexico next weekend, Nov. 8-9, for their final homestand of the season.
