LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron men's basketball team played a pair of exhibitions this weekend to prepare for the 2019-20 season, which opens up this Friday.
Â
Despite losing both of their tune-ups against Texas State and the University of Science and Arts (Okla.), the Aggie men came away with both good and bad things that they can focus on in the five days before their season opener in Colorado. Â
          Â
The exhibition slate got underway on Friday night when the Aggies traveled to San Marcos to take on Division I Texas State. Freshman guard
JeMarcus Caldwell led the Black and Gold in scoring, pouring in eight points while going 3-for-8 from the floor.
Â
CU was able to be competitive on the glass against a much taller TSU squad, only losing the rebounding battle by nine. The team shot just 37 percent from the floor, which was just below their average from a year ago (39-percent).
Â
Andrew Nguyen was the team's leading facilitator with a trio of assists, while
Joseph Clark led the way on the glass with six rebounds. The final score in CU's tune-up contest was 91-54 in favor of the Bobcats.
          Â
On Saturday, the Black and Gold concluded their exhibition slate with NAIA No. 13 ranked USAOÂ and fell 92-85. Sophomore guard
Brock Schreiner had a stellar performance for the Aggies with 28 points. He was the only CU player to reach double figures, but three more Aggies had at least eight points. The Choctaw, Okla. native shot an efficient 12-for-18 from the floor while going 2-for-5 behind the arc. Schreiner also dished out two assists and grabbed a pair of rebounds.
          Â
Senior
Tyler Williams mentioned at Lone Star Conference Media Day that he spent his offseason working on his playmaking ability and it was on full display against the Drovers, as he handed out four assists and added nine points and seven boards.Â
          Â
The Aggies field goal percentage jumped up to 43 percent on Saturday, while they shot the three-ball at a 39 percent clip, a 13 percent increase from Friday night's contest.
Â
Free throws were a struggle this weekend for Cameron, as the team left 13 points at the line combined in exhibition play. Last season, CU hit on 71 percent of their foul shots.
Â
Cameron's 2019-20 season opens up with a two-game slate in Colorado, as they visit Colorado State-Pueblo on Friday, Nov. 8, and then Colorado-Colorado Springs on Saturday, Nov. 9. Both games will tip off at 8:30 p.m. (CT).
