LAWTON, Okla. — The Cameron Aggies capture their first win of the 2019-20 season by way of a 16-point comeback to down the University of Central Oklahoma Bronchos;
Tyler Williams season-high 19 points powered the Black and Gold comeback.
          Â
At the first media timeout of the game, the Bronchos held an early one-point lead. The Black and Gold got a huge spark from
Jalen Nicholas who led the game in scoring at the first media timeout with five points. The senior forward from Houston, Texas also hauled in five rebounds in the first five minutes.
          Â
The two teams went back-for-forth for a few more minutes before the Bronchos eventually pulled away with eight minutes left before the break going up by double digits and causing CU head coach
Andrew Brown to get off the bench and use his first timeout of the game. This was familiar territory for the Aggies, after getting down by 12 on Monday against Rodgers State before seeing coach Brown call a timeout that sparked a comeback in the first half to eventually push the game into overtime.
          Â
Tonight, even Coach Brown's timeout could not cool off the red hot Bronchos, who took a 16- point lead into the break. The Bronchos were led by DeShawn McDowell who poured in a game-high 14 points in the first half, with an assist, and three rebounds, while being a game-high +19 in the plus-minus category. McDowell has started all seven games for UCO and averages 13 points and four rebounds per game entering tonight's contest. The redshirt junior from Oklahoma City, Okla, finished the night with 19 points.
Â
The Aggies got off to a hot start in the second half and pulled within eight points thanks to a 10-2 run. That run was spearheaded by
Kendall Scott, who posted five points in that two-minute span. By the first media timeout after the break, the Aggies trailed by 12, chipping away at the UCO lead.
Â
Coach Brown called a timeout following a Williams trey ball that pulled the Aggies within seven. Out of the timeout, the Aggies came out on fire, pulling within four after the Choctaw, Okla. native
Brock Schreiner nailed a trey ball for his 11th point of the contest.
Â
The Aggies found themselves in another familiar spot at the under eight media timeout, just hanging around. The 0-5 Aggies looked to finish off the final seven minutes and get over the hump for the first time this season.
Â
Cameron's late surge started with yet another Schreiner three pointer, followed by a
Darius Green trey ball to pull the Aggies within a pair. With five minutes left in the contest,
Tyler Williams tied the ball game up at 64-all. The Black and Gold, who once trailed by 16 points, had new life for the stretch run.
Â
At the final media timeout of the game, CU found themselves on the right side of a 13-2 run and holding a three-point lead, 69-66, with
Tyler Williams leading the team with a season-high 18 points.
The two sides exchanged blows the rest of the way, with the Bronchos getting within a point with just 46 seconds left in the contest.
Â
Cameron hung on despite a 4-1 run by the Bronchos, the Black and Gold played stellar defense on the final possession of the game to force a tough look at the rim that would have sent the game to overtime, instead it handed CU their first win of the season.Â
Â
The game saw ten lead changes and four ties. While the Bronchos controlled the lead for over half the contest (31:51), the Aggies, who only held lead for 6:44, came away with a huge win.
Â
CU saw a season-high three members in double figures with Schreiner and Scott each posting 14 points, and Williams contributing a season-high 19 points with two rebounds, two assists, and a pair of steals.
Â
The Aggies were able to stroke the deep ball at a 47 percent clip, their best average from long range this season. Schreiner and Williams each nailed four 3 pointers with
Darius Green and
Andrew Nguyen each hitting a 3.
Â
Now that they have their first win of the year, Cameron will kick off Lone Star Conference pay in Silver City, N.M. against the Western New Mexico Mustangs on Dec. 7 at 5 p.m. (CT). The Aggies end the non-conference slate 1-5 and will look to continue their momentum for Saturday into the new-look league schedule.
