LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron men's basketball team got to the free throw line 27 times and converted 21, but it was not enough as they lost their third straight contest, 84-75 to Angelo State.
The Aggies' ability to get to the foul line and covert at a 77.8 percent clip, was canceled out by their poor shooting. Against the Rams, CU shot just 33.8 percent from the floor and 26.1 percent from three-point range.
Kendall Scott led the Black and Gold with his first double-double of the season, recording 14 points on 5-11 shooting with 10 rebounds; he now has three games this season with double-digit rebounds. Four other Aggies reached double-figures in scoring with
Darius Green scoring 13,
Tyler Williams and
Jordan Lewis adding 12, and
Joseph Clark chipping in 10 points.
On the opposite end, Angelo State was able to covert over 53 percent of their shots in the win, with 40 of their 84 points coming in the paint and 17 on the fastbreak. The Rams also had five players in double-figures led by Collin Turner with 19 points on 7-11 shooting from the floor.Â
In the first half, ASU jumped out to an early lead, holding a 19-12 advantage at the 12:37 mark. That lead was quickly erased thanks to trey balls from Lewis and Clark. A pair of Williams free throws gave the Black and Gold the lead, which increased to five at the 8:15 mark.
The Rams answered and quickly the role was reversed as they were the ones that led by five with just over a minute left the first half. Clark and
Connor Slater helped CU cut that back down to two by halftime as the Aggies trailed 37-35 after 20 minutes of action.
Lewis led the Black and Gold, who were 11-15 from the foul line in the first frame, with nine points, while Scott added six points and eight rebounds by the break and Green had six points as well.
Angelo came out and extended their lead to eight early in the second half. It stayed there until threes from Scott, Lewis, and Green got the Aggies back to within one, 49-48, with 14:16 to play. The two teams battled back and forth until ASU used a 13-2 run to take a 68-56 lead into the under eight media timeout.
In the final minutes, Cameron was able to cut ASU's largest lead, 14-points, to just six on a
Tyler Williams fast break layup with 2:04 on the clock. That was as close as they would get as Cameron fell by nine to their receiving votes Angelo State Rams.
Now 2-8 overall this season and 1-3 in Lone Star Conference play, the Aggies will have a little over a week off for the holiday break. They will be back in action on Jan. 2 when they visit A&M-Commerce for the first came of 2020.
