Momoh records 1,000th point in road loss

ODESSA, Texas – Senior guard Tyus Momoh reached a big milestone on Thursday night, scoring his 1,000th career point as the Cameron men fell to UT Permian Basin, 95-75.

Momoh entered the night needing just five points to become the 18th member of the CU basketball program's 1,000-point club. The Grand Prairie, Texas native need just under 11 minutes of Thursday's game to hit that mark. Momoh made a three pointer at the 10:40 mark and then added a layup about a minute and a half later to reach the milestone. He finished the night with 10 points, giving him 1,005 points and counting for his four-year CU career.

Momoh was one of four players to reach double-figures for the Aggies, as Zach Dumas and Jordan Lewis led the way with 11 points each, while Momoh and Chris Royal both added 10.

The high-scoring Falcons had a game plan of attacking the paint against CU and it worked to their benefit as they scored 48 points in the paint and went to the line 22 times. Cameron, who shot 41.3 percent from the floor for the game, scored just 26 points in the paint while going 9-27 from three and 14-20 from the foul line.

UT Permian Basin got off to a fast start, taking a 25-14 lead halfway through the first 20 minutes of action. The Aggies were able to cut the deficit down to five six straight points from Royal, but a 4-0 run would extend their lead back out to nine by the break.

The Falcons were red-hot in the first half, scoring 47 points on 20-30 shooting from the field. On the other side of the court, CU shot 45.5 percent in the first frame while going 4-14 from three and 4-5 from the charity stripe. Royal led the way for CU with six points at the break, as Adam Rivera, Miles Washington, and Jacob Ledoux had all three already reached the double-figures mark.

Cameron held with the home team through the first part of the second half, cutting the Falcons' advantage down to four with a Dumas free throw at the 13:14 mark. After trading buckets in the next couple of minutes of play, UTPB went on a 9-0 run from the 8:32 mark to the 6:00 minute mark to extend their lead to 82-66. After a Royal free throw broke the CU scoring drought, UT Permian Basin went right back to work and used a five point run to go up by 20 by the under four minute media timeout. They carried that momentum into a 95-75 victory.

The Falcons starting bigs combined for 40 points, as Rivera finished with a team-high 21 points on 8-11 shooting while Washington scored 19 points on 9-12 shooting from the floor. Isaiah Hammons chipped in 15 points and Xavier Ledet and Ledoux each added 14 points. Rivera, Hammons, and Ledet combined to go 16-16 from the free throw line. UTPB shot 61 percent from the field and were 18-22 from the free throw line for the game.

Cameron now sits at 8-16 overall and 4-10 in Lone Star Conference play with the loss, while UTPB improves to 12-11 overall and 5-8 against conference foes.

The Aggies will continue their road stretch by visiting Western New Mexico on Saturday, Feb. 16, looking to snap their four-game skid.
