Softball powers their way to DH sweep

LAWTON, Okla. – The Aggie softball team totaled four homers and 17 runs scored as they swept a non-conference doubleheader against Northwestern Oklahoma State on Monday, 5-1 and 12-2 (five innings).

Game one of the day opened as a pitcher's duel with both Breley Webb and Karly Murray held the opposing offenses scoreless through the first two innings.

Webb was able to work around a pair of two-out singles by the Rangers to get out of the top of the third unharmed and then in the bottom of the frame, Brenna Busby put the first run of the game on the board with a solo homer to center field.

CU's 1-0 lead did not last long, as NWOSU scored on an error in the next half inning to tie the game.

B. Busby struck again in the bottom of the fifth, driving in Alyssa Osterdock, who doubled earlier in the inning, on a single to right for her second RBI of the contest.

An inning later, Cameron gave Webb a cushion with three runs to take a 5-1 lead. Webb helped her own cause by singling to lead off the inning. Two batters later, Raley Long singled to put two on for senior Abbey Warren. The CU right fielder blasted her second three-run homer of the week to give her team the four-run advantage. Cameron loaded the bases later in the inning, but was unable to score another run.

Webb went all seven innings in the circle for CU, giving up just the one run (unearned) on eight hits and a walk. She also had five strikeouts in her fourth win of the season.

B. Busby went 2-4 with a run scored and two RBI, while Osterdock added a pair of hits and Warren added three RBI on her homer in the sixth.

Cameron wasted no time in game two putting runs on the board, putting a five-spot on the board in the bottom of the first. Back-to-back singles from B. Busby and Khmari Edwards brought home the first run of the inning, and then two batters later Callie Busby drove in Edwards on an RBI single of her own. Warren walked to load the bases with one out for Erycka Pierce, who delivered a clutch RBI single to left to give CU a 3-0 advantage. The final two runs came on a fielder's choice from Bethany Hines and a sacrifice fly by Kaylyn Smith.

In the next inning, the Black and Gold added two more as C. Busby drove a ball over the center field fence to allow both her and Webb to cross the plate. Northwestern was able to get one back in the next half inning thanks to back-to-back two out singles.

The Aggies were not done though, scoring five more runs in the bottom of the third. Smith led off the inning with a double and then a B. Busby single and an Edwards walk loaded the bases for Webb. The CU freshman unloaded the base-paths with a double to right center to give the Aggies a 10-1 advantage. In the next at-bat, C. Busby showed off her power again, hitting her fourth homer of the week.

Up 12-1, Cameron held the Rangers scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings to secure the run-rule victory and sweep the doubleheader.

The Aggies used three pitchers in the nightcap, with Hines getting the win by going three innings and giving up just the one run on three hits. She also struck out seven NWOSU batters, while Rylee Willmon and Turner Whorton each struck out two batters respective innings of work.

C. Busby finished the game going 3-3 at the plate, scoring three runs and driving in five. Her sister, B. Busby was 2-4 with two runs scored, while Edwards was 2-3 with two scored runs and a RBI and Webb went 2-3 with three runs scored and three RBI.

Cameron is now 19-10 overall this season. They will face a tough test this weekend, hosting No. 8 West Texas A&M for a three-game series, March 22-23.
