Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Schreiner scores 18 points in LSC quarterfinal loss to top seed West Texas A&M

FRISCO, Texas – The Cameron men's basketball team clawed away at a big first half deficit against No. 4 West Texas, but could not complete the second half comeback, falling 72-59 in the Lone Star Conference Tournament quarterfinal.

When looking at the box score, the two teams seemed evenly matched. Both shot just over 40 percent from the field, WT controlled the boards by just one, and the turnover differential was only five in favor of the Buffs. Cameron was 7-14 from three in the game, while WT was 10-28 from behind the three-point arc. The biggest difference was that West Texas went to the foul line twice as many times as CU, going 14-20 from the foul line, while the Black and Gold was 6-10 from the charity stripe.

Freshman Brock Schreiner finished with a team-high 18 points, going 7-17 from the field and 2-5 from three. Zach Dumas scored all 10 of his points in the second half, while Tyus Momoh scored nine points, had six rebounds, and six assists. Additionally, Jalen Nicholas recorded 11 rebounds, his fifth game with 10 or more boards this season.

A three pointer from Gach Gach just 10 seconds into the game kicked things off and gave WT an early 3-0 lead. Almost two minutes later Schreiner nailed a three to give CU their first points of the game. Schreiner scored the Aggies first 10 points, and at the 14:27 the score was tied 10-10. After trading buckets to set the score at 13 all, the Buffs used a 7-0 run to jump out to a 20-13 lead with just under 10 to play in the half. Another Schreiner three got CU back to within one, but WT answered with a pair of threes of their own to take a 10 point advantage. The No. 4 team in the nation then went on a 19-11 run to close out the first half and lead 45-27.

Cameron shot just 42 percent during the first 20 minutes of play, but hit on five of their seven three point attempts. On the other end, WT shot 44.8 percent from the floor and was 7-16 from three. The main difference was that the Buffs went to the foul line 15 times, while CU attempted just four free throws. CU also turned the ball over 14 times compared to WT's six giveaways.

Schreiner ended the half with 13 points, while Momoh added six points on 2-2 shooting from three-point range. Gach led the Buffs with 16 points through the first 20 minutes.

West Texas A&M opened up the second half by taking a 22 point lead at the 14:50 mark on an Eric Mosely three. From there, Cameron went on a 9-0 run with five points coming from Dumas to get to within 13 with just over 12 minutes left in the game. The teams traded buckets over the next few minutes until Momoh hit a three pointer to get the Black and Gold to within single-digits, 63-55, with 7:08 to play. Cameron answered WT makes to stay within nine thanks to a Kendall Scott layup at the 5:13 mark, but that would be their last points of the contest as WT came away with the 72-59 win.

The Buffs were led by Gach's 21 points, while LSC Player of the Year Ryan Quaid added 15 points and 12 rebounds and Mosley added 11 points in just 17 minutes on the court.

Cameron finishes the 2018-19 season with a 9-20 overall record. They are now 1-5 all-time against WT in the LSC Tournament, while falling to a 5-15 record in the tournament all-time.
