LAWTON, Okla. – After opening up Lone Star Conference play this weekend with a 1-1 record, the Aggie volleyball team is set to face the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith in a home and home series this week.

The Matchup:
The week starts out with a matchup between the Aggies and Lady Lions at the Aggie Gym on Tuesday, Sep. 24, at 5:30 p.m. After a few off days, the two teams meet up again on Friday, Sep. 27, in Fort Smith, Ark. The latter of the two matches is scheduled for 6 p.m. The two meetings will be just the fourth and fifth times that the two programs have met all time, with UAFS holding a 2-1 series lead. However, Cameron's lone win was the last time they faced the Lady Lions, which was back in 2011.
Looking Back:
Cameron opened up the conference season with a 3-0 win over Midwestern State on Friday night. The hit a season-high .264 on the attack, led by
Sarah Wright, who had 14 kills to just two errors. CU also found success on the blocks against MSU, with
Caitlyn Henderson totaling six blocks and
Walia Franklin adding five. The next day, the Aggies lost a four-set match to Texas Woman's.
Arianna Navarrete had 10 kills, two service aces, and five blocks, while
Riana Blount had six blocks as CU totaled 12.0 for the match.
About the Aggies:
The Aggies, who are now 4-6 on the season and 1-1 in conference play, average 11.4 kills and 10.8 assists per set while hitting .175 on the attack. Cameron also records 1.3 service aces and 1.9 total blocks per frame. Wright,
Shantalle Demirjian, and Navarrete all average over 2.00 kills per set to lead the Black and Gold. At setter,
Katherine Manning averages 5.64 assists and
Desiree Marmolejo records 3.69 helpers per set. Additionally, Navarrete is sixth in the LSC with 15 service aces, while Blount (0.94), Henderson (0.84), and Franklin (0.77) are all ranked in the top-20 of the conference in blocks per set. Â
Scouting the Lady Lions:
UAFS has a strong offense that has powered them to an 8-2 record this season. They average 12.9 kills and 11.2 assists per set while hitting .268 on the attack, and are coming off a 2-0 weekend against MSU and TWO. A trio of Lady Lions average over 3.00 kills per set, led by Anna Demmer, who has 123 kills already this season. Setter Amanda Van Wyk leads the team with 9.53 assists per frame, while Lexie Johnston heads up the defensive middle with 1.11 blocks per set.
Up Next:
After CU's two meetings with UAFS, they will hit the road for a pair of non-divisional matches against Tarleton on Oct. 4 and DBU on Oct. 5. They then return home for a four-match home stand that begins with a rematch with East Central on Oct. 8.
