LAWTON, Okla. – In front of over 500 Ft. Sil soldiers, the Cameron men's basketball team's comeback bid falls short as they were unable to fully erase Midwestern State's 25-point lead on Saturday, falling 80-76.
Â
The Cameron Aggies came into this evening looking for a season sweep of the Mustangs after holding on to win on Wednesday night in the Lone Star State. The last time these two teams met at the Aggie Gym, the Black and Gold needed a historic comeback down 15 points with five minutes left, that was capped off by a game-winning bucket from then senior guard
Tyus Momoh. CU would need to find some more comeback magic in this one as they quickly got down to the rival Mustangs.
          Â
With three minutes left in the half, the game got away from the Aggies as they saw Midwestern State go on a 12-0 run in under two minutes of action. From there, CU just could not recover, eventually going down by as many as - points in the Red River Rivalry clash.
          Â
The scrappy Aggies kept chipping away at the Mustangs lead, getting it within 11 at the midway point of the second half. The packed house at the Aggie gym helped lift the Aggies to an 8-2 scoring run that allowed CU to get back in the contest. With visions of last year's blow lead flashing before his eyes, the Mustangs head man elected to call a timeout with just over five minutes left.
Â
As MSU began to tighten up seeing their offense get called for a shot clock violation and a five-second call, the Aggies had their shot at another memorable comeback. With three minutes left a
Kendall Scott and-one pulled the Aggies back within single digits and plenty of time to mount a comeback.
          Â
Down by three with 30 seconds left, the Aggies could not connect from deep, and their comeback bid fell just short against the Mustangs.
          Â
The Aggies got another lift off the bench from Sophomore
Andrew Nguyen who earned 16 points to lead the team in scoring in this contest. The Houston, Tex. native has come alive in the second half of the season, capitalizing on his minutes' increase. In the past two weeks, when given over ten minutes of action, Nguyen has averaged 15 points, 2 assists, 2 rebounds, and a steal.
          Â
Nguyen was one of four Aggies to reach double figures tonight, as
Darius Green joined him by putting up 12 points and hauling in three rebounds.
          Â
Kendall Scott came alive down-low giving the Aggies a huge boost inside as he was able to bring down eight rebounds and swatted away a pair of shots and earned a steal on the defensive end. Scott went to the line seven times mustering in a couple and one's in the process on his way to 11 points in tonight's contest.
          Â
Jalen Nicholas was the other player to get into double figures as he posted 11 points and grabbed four rebounds. The CU big man also earned a pair of steals on the defensive end.
          Â
Cameron faces a quick two-game road stretch next week beginning with a battle at divisional foe UAFS on Thursday, Jan. 23.    Â
