ODESSA, Texas – Poor three-point and free throw shooting was the difference in another close loss for Cameron men's basketball as they fell to UT Permian Basin 85-80 on Saturday afternoon.
Cameron, who shot over 53 percent from the floor, made eight threes, and was 22-27 during Friday's game against UTPB, made just four threes on 22 attempts during Saturday's contest, and knocked down only half of their 20 free throw attempts.
Despite those poor percentages, CU still shot over 47 percent from the field, scoring 50 of their 80 points in the paint. Junior
Brock Schreiner led the way, scoring 28 points on 11-18 shooting from the field and 4-4 from the foul line. The Choctaw, Okla. native finishes the weekend averaging 29.5 points and going 16-16 from the charity stripe.
Kendall Scott was one of the reasons the Black and Gold controlled the battle on the glass 43-34. The junior from Houston, Texas recorded his sixth collegiate double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds during Saturday's outing.
Freshman
Jalen Mangum notched his first collegiate double-digit scoring game, added 12 points on 5-12 shooting with 10 of his points coming in the second half alone.
Like Friday's high-scoring affair, the two teams were evenly matched during the first 20 minutes of action. Cameron shot just 38.5 percent from the field and was 3-12 from three in the first but was able to get to the free throw line 15 times, making nine of those. CU also controlled the battle on the boards early, leading UTPB 26-19.
The back-and-forth battle was evident by multiple lead changes and neither team getting more than a five point lead. Cameron led for over eight minutes of the first frame, but UTPB's ability to knockdown the long-range shot (6-16 3FG) kept them in the game as the score was tied 42-all at halftime.
Schreiner's momentum from Friday's career-game carried into Saturday's contest as the junior guard had 17 points to lead all scorers at the break. He was 6-10 from the field and 4-4 from the foul line while also tying the team lead with four boards;
Marques Warrior Jr. had eight points at the break for CU.
UT Permian Basin started off the second half on fire, building up a 10 point lead by the 8:55 mark. Cameron showed their resiliency, chipping away at the deficit before a layup by Mangum tied the game at 74 with just 3:14 left to play.
The teams traded buckets until CU took their first lead of the second half, 80-78, on a jumper by Schreiner. UTPB answered with an and-one play by Trevion Lamar, putting his team on the high-side 81-80. The Aggies had multiple chances to tie the game, but a couple of missed threes and a missed free throw stalled the comeback. The Falcons knocked down four foul shot in the final seven seconds to secure the 85-80 win.
UTPB's 21 made free throws were a big part of their fifth win of the season. Lamar was a perfect 10-10 from the foul line, finishing with 22 points, while Jordan Horn led the home team with 26 points and was 5-6 from the charity stripe.
Cameron finished their 2020 part of their schedule with an 0-4 record with three of their four losses coming by five points or less. Their next test comes in the form of a home and home series with division foe Dallas Baptist on Jan. 2 (in Dallas, Texas) and Jan. 4 (in Lawton, Okla.).
