LAWTON, Okla. – The Aggie men's basketball team found themselves in unfortunate familiar territory on Saturday as another late comeback effort falls short in a 92-85 to Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Â
In the first half, the Aggies could not slow down the physical Javelinas, as they were out rebounded in the opening frame 23-16. Kingsville created eight CU turnovers and drew nine fouls in the first 20 minutes of play. Nothing seemed to go right for CU in the first half as they shot just 33 percent from the floor and 16 percent from deep on their way to a 47-25 first-half deficit.
Â
Cameron shifted into a pressure cooker style defense in the second half, which allowed them to claw back into the contest. Once down 24 to the Hogs, the Aggies generated 11 second-half turnovers and outscored the Javelinas 60-45. Both teams shot 50 percent from the floor, while CU was able to nail 10 threes at a 66 percent clip in the last 20 minutes of action. They came out of halftime and won the battle on the glass, but just could not complete the comeback bid.
Â
The Black and Gold saw a pair of 20-point scorers in the loss, as
Darius Green continued his strong play with a career-high 20 points while chipping in three steals, two rebounds, and nailing four threes.
Â
Sophomore guard
Brock Schreiner earned a team and game-high 22 points while dishing out seven assists. The Choctaw, Okla. native also came down with eight rebounds and a blocked shot.
Â
Another sophomore
Kendall Scott finished just shy of back-to-back double-doubles with nine points, six rebounds, three assists, and a block. Scott was one of eight Aggies to score at least five points, as the squad distributed the points around in their comeback effort.
Â
Webster Simeus was another one of the Aggies to notch over five points, turning in six, his highest point total since transferring in last fall. The junior big man collected seven rebounds and had a block and a steal on the defensive end.
Â
The stretch-run does not get any easier for the now 6-14 Cameron squad, who will now turn their focus to previously ranked DBU Patriots, who they will visit on Thursday, Feb. 6. They then make the trip to Stephenville, Texas on Saturday, Feb. 8, to battle the Division I bound Tarleton Texans.
