Hedge and Nwakamma combine for 49 points in win over Oklahoma Christian

LAWTON, Okla. – The Aggie women get back on track with win a 79-58 win over Oklahoma Christian; Maighan Hedge and Amaka Nwakamma each post 20-point efforts for CU.

As one of the best teams in the Lone Star Conference since the turn of the calendar, the Aggies entered this contest winners of six-of-their-last-eight games.

In the first quarter, the Aggies found themselves in a defensive battle with the Eagles. Down by just two after the first ten minutes, the Black and Gold already forced four turnovers and were able to outrebound OC.

By halftime, the Aggies were down just one point, after an offensive explosion from sophomore sensation Maighan Hedge. The leading scorer in the Lone Star Conference ended the first half with 12 points, and a pair of assists.  The Black and Gold got a huge lift off the bench from Amaka Nwakamma who turned in 12 first-half points of her own. Nwakamma was able to produce a steal on the defensive end, to go along with her two rebounds. CU head coach Emma Andrews spoke of Nwakama's game saying, "It is the reason right now we are good...I can sub anyone off and, on the floor, and we do not lose too much."

At the break, the best shooting three-point team in the LSC was stroking the trey ball at just a 33 percent clip but held a slight advantage on the glass. The first twenty minutes were a defensive slugfest, as CU held OC to just a lowly 39 percent shooting from the field.

Hedge's offensive outburst did not get cooled off by the halftime break. The Melbourne, Aus. native ended the third frame with 23 points and was the main reason the Aggies were able to take control of this contest in the third quarter.

CU's sophomore guard Hedge again was helped out by some clutch buckets from gritty senior guard Amaka Nwakamma whose late third quarter and-one helped the Black and Gold blow the game open. She entered the fourth frame with 21 points to her credit, along with six rebounds, and an assist.

In the fourth quarter, the Aggies continued to cruise, eventually knocking off OC for the second time this season, 79-58. Maighan Hedge continued her magnificent season, ending the game with 27 points, three rebounds, and four assists. Aggie head coach Emma Andrews said after the game "I am not sure if she is one of the best players in the conference or the best player in the conference."

Hedge and Nwakamma were the lone Aggies to reach double figures, but freshman Stephanie Peterson was able to lay the foundation for the Aggies in this big win. The Colorado, native hauled in nine rebounds, and three assists. Emma Andrews spoke highly of the young combo guard, adding "It has taken work, and honestly just trust. We are not afraid to give out freshmen a chance."

Up next for the Black and Gold they continue their final homestand by hosting UAFS for a Saturday tilt in the Aggie Gym that will double as Senior Day and Homecoming for Cameron.
