Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Second quarter woes lead to Aggie loss at TAMUK

KINGSVILLE, Texas – Cameron University's women's basketball team put together three quality quarters of basketball on Saturday against Texas A&M-Kingsville, but they were outscored 25-9 in the second period, resulting in a 78-70 loss.

If you take away the second 10 minutes of play, the Aggies held the advantage 61-53, shot nearly 40 percent from the field and were 12-27 from three. However, women's college hoops counts all four quarters, and that second period played a big part in CU's fifth loss of the season and second in as many days to TAMUK.

Cameron's top two scorers on the season led the way offensively. Sophomore guard Stephanie Peterson scored a career-best 22 points with all five of her made field goals coming from long range. The Broomfield, Colo. native also added eight rebounds, falling two boards shy of her second double-double of the season.

Junior guard Maighan Hedge was held to just nine points during Friday's game, bounced back for 17 points on 6-9 shooting from the field on Saturday. Additionally, Karley Miller added 11 points and five rebounds off the CU bench.

The first half was a tale of two quarters for the Black and Gold. Cameron looked like the Aggies of old in the first quarter, knocking down four three pointers and leading by as many as 11 as they held a 20-13 advantage after 10 minutes of action.

Cameron looked like a completely different team in the second, going 3-14 from the field including 0-6 from three as they were outscored by TAMUK 25-9. The poor second period put CU in a 38-29 hole at halftime.

Peterson led all scorers at the break with 12 points on 3-7 shooting to go along with five rebounds. The Aggies shot just 34.4 percent from the field and were 4-13 from three in the first half.

The third quarter was back and forth and that was evident in the 17-16 score. Cameron was able to get within five of the Javelinas, 48-43, with five minutes to go in the period, but the home team closed out the frame with four straight to lead 55-45 heading into the final quarter.

In the fourth, TAMUK took control during the first five minutes, extending their lead to 18 points. The Black and Gold would not go away, scoring 11 straight (nine on Hedge three-pointers), to cut the deficit to seven with 1:49 to play. That was as close as CU would get, as the Javelinas made four free throws down the stretch to secure the 78-70 victory.

The Javelinas dominated the glass, 41-29, but just 10 of those coming on the offensive end, resulting in just five second chance points. Cameron won the turnover battle 8-15, and got 19 of their points off of Javelinas turnovers.

Cameron is now 3-5 on the young season and will get a chance at their fourth win in just two days when they host UT Permian Basin for a makeup game on Monday, Feb. 1, at 5 p.m. in the Aggie Gym.
