Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

CU falls to Oklahoma Christian in overtime thriller

LAWTON – Just a few days after beating Oklahoma Christian in a close game for their first win of the season, the Cameron men's basketball team fell in overtime to that same OC team, 75-73, in close battle.

The Aggies and OC were both winless entering the week's series, but CU was the first to earn that elusive victory when they won 88-84 in Oklahoma City behind a 31-point effort by junior guard Brock Schreiner. Saturday in the Aggie Gym, it was the Eagles who earned their first win of the 2020-21 season, but Schreiner and the rest of the Black and Gold squad did not make it easy.

Schreiner, a Choctaw, Okla. native, scored a team-high 21 points, going 8-20 from the field and 4-11 from three-point range. He was aided by fellow junior Kendall Scott, who recorded his third double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds, and sophomore Dalton Vinson, who scored 10 points on 4-5 shooting for his second straight game in double-figures.

If the first game between the two teams was any indication, Saturday's game would be close throughout, and it was. CU held a 43-40 advantage going into the half thanks to a last second three-pointers by Connor Slater.

Both teams shot over 50 percent from the field and were 3-4 from the foul line in the first 20 minutes of action. The Aggies advantage came from behind the arc, where they were 6-12, led by three triples by Schreiner.

That back and forth action continued into the second half and a three by junior guard Andrew Nguyen tied the game for the eighth time 64-64 with just under two minutes to play. The two teams combined to go 0-5 in the final two minutes of regulation, including a half-court heave by Schreiner that missed the mark, sending the game to overtime.
Neither team has played extra basketball this season and Cameron was 0-1 in overtime games a year ago, while OC went 2-3 during the 2019-20 in overtime contests.

The extra five minutes, like the rest of the game, was back and forth with OC taking the lead early, but CU responded each time. A Slater fast break layup tied the game at 71 with 1:36 on the clock, and over a minute later OC took back the lead on a jumper just inside the three-point arc by Reagan Donovan.

After a called Cameron timeout with 13 seconds on the clock, Schreiner drove through the lane and scored his 20th and 21st points to tie the game again, leaving OC five seconds and the length of the court to either end the game or send it to a second overtime.

Like they had been doing all night, the Eagles turned to freshman Elijah Elliot, who drove the length of the court and drove past a host of Aggies to the rim. Elliot's layup left his hand with less than a second left and went through the net with zeros on the clock to secure Oklahoma Christian's first win of the year, 75-73.

Elliot led all scorers with 26 points, while a pair of other Eagles were in double-figures. OC shot just over 50 percent from the field and went 5-14 from three point range. They also doubled the amount of free throw attempts of CU and scored 19 points off 15 Aggie turnovers.

Cameron shot 42.6 percent from the field as a team and went 10-27 from long range. They were just 5-9 from the charity stripe with two of those coming from Vinson. CU is now 1-7 on the season and 1-3 in Lone Star Conference North Division play.

The Aggies next scheduled games were to be against Western New Mexico on Thursday and Friday, Jan. 14-15, next week. Due to COVID-19 concerns, the WNMU basketball teams have paused all team activities and those games have been canceled. Cameron's next scheduled test will be against UAFS on Jan. 21 in Lawton and Jan. 23 in Fort Smith, Ark.
