LAWTON -- Aggie women fall in a hard fought battle to Oklahoma Christian, despite CU bench production.
The Aggies and Eagles got into a defensive battle on Saturday afternoon the two teams were scoreless at the seven minute mark which prompted a timeout from head coach Emma Andrews. After a 5-0 run out of the timeout by OC, Cameron rallied off a 6-2 run which caused the Eagles to burn a first quarter timeout as well. By the end of the frame, the Aggies fell behind the short-handed Eagles by three as a first frame buzzer beater from Stephanie Peterson brought the Black and White closer.
At the media timeout in the second quarter, the Aggies found themselves down by five. Each side had four players registering double-digit minutes at that point with Peterson doing her best to keep the struggling Aggies in it with her team-high four points and three rebounds. The Black and Gold struggled to keep possession each time down the floor racking up 10 turnovers by the 3 minute mark in the second frame. CU was able to generate nine Eagle turnovers on the other end to that point.
Oklahoma Christian grew their largest lead heading into the halftime break, taking a nine point led into the locker room. The Aggies could not get their 3-point shots to fall in the first 20-minutes starting 1-for-16 from beyond the arc. Jazmin Luster and Peterson tied for the team-high in points (4) at the half. Luster was able to make an impact in the first half by leading the team in rebounds (5), and also was credited with a steal on the defensive end.Â
The second half started with a bang as Katie King and Maighan Hedge took turns drilling back-to-back triples as CU generated back-to-back turnovers to rattle the Eagles in the Aggie Gym and practically erase the nine point deficit in a matter of minutes. At the third quarter media timeout, the Aggies found themselves down just a point thanks to stellar defense that saw CU allow just four points in five minutes of action.
On their first offense possession after the media timeout the Aggies took a one point led and their swarming defense helped them keep it throughout that third quarter.
The Eagles rallied to start the final frame not only did they erase the CU lead, but they were able to stretch their own lead to six. With 2-minutes to play CU got the Eagle lead down to one point. Despite the comeback bid, the Aggies fell short, 53-47.Â
The Black and Gold got a huge lift from Kiara Lovings off the bench, checking in to give the Aggies a team-high 11 points. The Harrah, Okla. Native went 3-for-5 from beyond the arc, responsible for half the CU 3 point production.Â
The Aggies will be in action again on Thursday, January 21st at 5 p.m. in the Aggie Gym when they welcome UAFS for a home-and-home series that wraps up in Arkansas on Saturday, January 23rd.Â
