Aggies place fifth at MSU Invitational

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Cameron men's golf battled bad weather and a tough field on Tuesday as they wrapped up the Midwestern State Invitational with a three-round score of 864 and a fifth-place finish. 
 
Cameron entered the final round of the Midwestern State Invitational just a few strokes back of the top-5 teams. Despite shooting their highest score of the tournament at 293, the Aggies jumped up a spot on the team leaderboard during the final round, passing A&M-Commerce for their second top-5 finish of the fall. 
 
Senior Tyler Kaman led Cameron on the final day of the tournament, shooting an even 71 with five birdies on the scorecard to finish with a 54-hole score of 215, just four back of his teammate Joey Kirk and good for a tie for 19thindividually. 
 
Kirk, who had a great second round (67) followed that up with a 72 to total a score of 211 at Cameron's third tournament of the fall. The Brownwood, Texas native had a pair of birdies and an eagle on hole six on his scorecard to wrap up the event. He finished in a tie for ninth place. 
 
Freshman Trevor Mierl ended his tournament with a 75, as did Preston Holmes. Mierl totaled a score of 219 for his second collegiate event and Holmes carded a 227 in the 54-hole tournament. Hamish Murray added a 79 in the final round to card a 224 at the MSU Invitational. 
 
AS for Cameron's three individuals, Devin Whipple finished with a third-round score of 76 to end with a 222, with freshman Hunter Drotts a stroke back after shooting the Aggies' best score of the final round on Tuesday, 70. Donovan Osborne finished with a 243 after carding an 85 in the third round. 
 
Kirk led the Black and Gold with 12 birdies and Murray had 11 under-par rounds. Kaman had a team-high 36 made pars for the 54-hole tournament and was one of three Aggies with an eagle. Kirk had a field best two-under score on par-3 holes and Kaman shot one-under. 
 
Host team Midwestern State maintained their lead from day one, shooting a 279 on Tuesday to finish with an 838 total score. Hutchinson finished 10 strokes back of MSU and Colorado Christian finished in third with an 853. St. Mary's came in fourth, just two strokes ahead of Cameron. 
 
The Mustangs' Jake Doggett set a tournament record 15-under total of 198 to win the individual medalist honor. He finished seven strokes ahead of the second place finisher, teammate Jake Leatherwood. 
 
Cameron wraps up the fall next week, Oct. 18-19, at their home tournament, The Hrnciar. The 54-hole event will take place at The Territory Golf Course in Duncan, Okla.
