SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Aggies were just a point away from leading 2-1 against St. Mary's on Saturday, but a swing of momentum allowed the home team to win in four sets.
After a tough loss on Friday, the Cameron volleyball team looked to have bounced back by playing a close first set and winning set two over the Rattlers. CU then led late in the third, but a service error gave the home team the surge they needed to win the third and then take the fourth and hand CU their 24th straight loss.
The Aggies ended up hitting .168 on the attack with 46 kills in the loss. They totaled 11 blocks and had nine aces against StMU, who also had 11 blocks and nine aces while hitting .220 on the attack against the Black and Gold.
Arianna Navarrete had a monster game for the Aggies, totaling 23 points with 19 kills, 12 digs, two aces, and four blocks. Her younger sister
Anjolie Navarrete added 9.5 points with eight kills and 12 digs of her own.
Setters
Desiree Marmolejo (20) and
Kendall Kilchrist (15) comebined for 35 assists for Cameron while Marmolejo added a double-double with 10 digs.
Presley Shearin led CU with 18 digs and the blocking effort was led by
Jessica Lipkit with six and
Caitlyn Henderson with five rejections.
St. Mary's led big early in set one, but the Aggies were resilient on Saturday and used 6-1 stretch to cut the deficit to just two points (16-14). The two teams went back and forth until the two-point deficit remained after an ace from An. Navarrete, making it 22-20. StMU then scored three of the final four points to win 25-21.
Despite the Rattlers leading 5-0 to start the second, Cameron had one of their most dominant runs of the year midway through the frame, using a 12-1 run to take a commanding 22-12 lead. The home team was unable to mount a rally in the final points as CU tied the match with a 25-16 win.
The third set had 12 ties and four lead changes in what was the closest of the four sets on Saturday afternoon (the rest of the match totaled eight and one). Cameron pulled ahead by three thanks to a 6-1 stretch, but a few plays later StMU was able to come back and tie the frame at 17.
St. Mary's scored three points in a row late to take a 23-21 lead, but the Aggies answered with a 3-0 run of their own capped by an ace by Lipkit to give CU set-point (24-23). However, a service error on the next play tied the frame and then the Rattlers scored back-to-back points to claim the back-and-forth 26-24 win.
Cameron hung around early in the fourth, but a 7-1 stretch by the home team gave them a 12-6 advantage early. The closest CU would get the rest of the way is four points as St. Mary's used a 5-1 rally at the end of the frame to win 25-17 and take the match.
The Aggies now sit at 1-25 overall and 0-14 heading into their final home stand of the season. They host UAFS on Friday, Nov. 5, and then Oklahoma Christian on Saturday, Nov. 6, for Senior Day. CU then closes out the season on the road against rival Midwestern State on Nov. 11.
