Cameron closes out season against rival MSU

LAWTON – After a positive last weekend at home, the Aggie volleyball team looks to keep that momentum as they wrap up the 2021 regular season on the road Thursday against rival Midwestern State.

Cameron snapped a losing skid that dated back to the second day of the season last Friday but UAFS in four sets to open their final homestand. They then began their match against Oklahoma Christian up 2-0 before losing in a five-set thriller on Saturday. Now, the Black and Gold finishes up their schedule with Red River rival MSU on Veteran's Day.

LAST TIME OUT
The Aggies played some of their best volleyball this past weekend against the Lady Lions and Eagles. In the match against UAFS, CU totaled 64 kills and 12 aces led by the sisters from Tucson, Ariz. with Arianna Navarrete totaling 17 points and Anjolie Navarrete adding 16 points in the four-set win. Less than 24 hours later, the duo combined for 47.5 points with Arianna totaling 20 kills and Anjolie adding 18. Desiree Marmolejo and Sydney Bolin had strong final performances in front of the home crow, with Marmolejo recording back-to-back doubles doubles (21 assists-11 digs and 25 assists-18 digs) and Bolin putting up 18 and 31 digs, which was a career-high.

ABOUT THE AGGIES
Cameron enters the final match of the regular season with a 1-15 Lone Star Conference record and a 2-26 overall mark. They are hitting .109 on the attack with 9.8 kills and 9.0 digs per set. Their back-to-back matches of 12 service aces has bumped that average to 1.4 per frame, while their 188 total blocks ranks second in the LSC this fall. Ar. Navarrete leads the team and is in the top-10 of the LSC with her 272 kills and 29 service aces. Three other Aggies have over 100 kills this season, including freshman Jacee Stelter who has 126. Jessica Lipkit is also in the top-10 of the LSC in total blocks with a team-best 86, while three other CU players have over 40. Marmolejo, despite missing a good chunk of the season, is second on the team with 171 assists, averaging 4.62 per set.

SCOUTING MIDWESTERN STATE
Like the Aggies, MSU sits at 1-15 in league play while posting a 3-21 mark overall. However, they have lost their last 15 matches with their last win coming against Texas A&M International on Sep. 17. The Mustangs hit .129 on the attack with an average of 11.5 kills and 10.5 assists per set. 1.1 of their points per frame come from the service line and they have totaled 125 blocks this fall. Individually, sophomore Lauryn Bourne leads the attack with 220 kills, while two others, Lissette Lefforge and Kaitlynn Stoker, both have over 170 kills. Sophomore setter Autumn Roach leads the team with 5.43 assists per set, while freshman Regan Willms averages 4.07 and has a team-high 27 aces on the year. Lefforge also leads MSU with 58 blocks with Taylor Anderson adding 46.

THE HISTORY
Cameron leads the volleyball chapter of the Red River showdown history, owning a 37-25 record over the Mustangs. However, MSU holds a slight advantage at D.L. Ligon Colisuem (15-14) and has won six of the last 10 matches. The two meetings during the spring went the way of the Mustangs as they won in three sets then out-lasted CU in five the next night. Cameron has not lost three matches in a row to MSU since 2013. The Aggies lead in the series comes from a stretch of 24 straight against MSU from 1991-2004.
