LAWTON – Cameron men's basketball got off to a slow start against Colorado-Colorado Springs, and despite scrappy play in the second half, can't bounce back for first loss of season.
After starting their season 1-0 with a home win over Colorado State-Pueblo on Friday, the Aggies welcomed the UCCS Mountain Lions to the Aggie Gym on Saturday night. The CU offense started off slow, and the Black and Gold were never able to recover in an 84-66 loss.
The Aggies fell behind by 23 points early in the second half, but UCCS wouldn't come out with a win in the Aggie Gym without a scrappy late run. That run was largely due to a brilliant rotational decision by the Black and the Gold head coach
Andrew Brown to sub in spark plug guard
Deondre Earley, who was a pest defensively. In just 16 minutes of action, the defensive stalwart from St. Petersburg, Fla. swiped a game-high four steals as Brown deployed the pressure to try and get his team back in it.
Cameron was able to cut the 23-point deficit to 10 on a three-pointer by
Alex Gonzalez with 10:09 left to play, but the lead quickly swelled back out to 20 points due to the red-hot shooting of the visiting Mountain Lions, who shot nearly 52 percent from the floor in the win.
The Aggie offense saw a trio of Aggies in double-figures including
Connor Slater who had a team-high 14 points, while
Brock Schreiner and
Colt Savage chipped in 11 and 10 respectively.
Marques Warrior Jr. came off the bench to produce nine points to go along with his four assists, five rebounds, and a steal defensively.
As a team, the Black and Gold shot 37 percent from the floor, going 6-20 from three while hitting 14 of their 17 foul shots. They also got out-worked on the boards, 48-29, with 18 of those UCCS rebounds coming on the offensive end, resulting in 16 second chance points.
Cameron's men, now 1-1, face their first road test of the season on Wednesday, Nov. 17, when they visit in-state foe Southwestern Oklahoma State. The battle in Weatherford, Okla. is set to begin at 7 p.m.
