LAWTON –
Stephanie Peterson had a career-high 26 points as the Aggies forced the Mustangs into 33 turnovers in their 91-71 rivalry win on Tuesday night.
The Cameron women's basketball team put their 2-0 record to the test by hosting also undefeated Midwestern State in a rare early-season, non-conference battle against the rival Mustangs. Peterson was one of five players to reach double-figure points in the 20-point win.
In a rematch of a Lone Star Conference Championship first-round game, the Aggies' usual press defense took a quarter to get going, but once it did, the Mustangs struggled to hold on to the ball, finishing the game with 33 turnovers. In CU's second straight game with 33 forced turnovers, 17 came on defensive steals led by Peterson's five and super-senior
Logan Collyer's three swipes.
Offensively, the Black and Gold had five players reach double-figures led by Peterson's career-high performance. The Broomfield, Colo. Native was 11-14 from the field and 2-3 from long range. She also chipped in four assists and nine rebounds, falling one board shy of a double-double.
Reigning LSC Offensive Player of the Week
Maighan Hedge had 19 points, 13 in the second half, while adding seven assists to lead the Aggies. With her two threes in the game, Hedge took over the second place in the program history book with 181 made threes, behind Ava Battese's 322 three-pointers made.
Additionally,
Korie Allensworth scored 12 points,
Katie King had 11 and
Whitney Outon scored 10, making two big threes in the fourth quarter.
Cameron shot 47 percent from the floor, 39 percent from three, and improved on their free throw shooting that was their one flaw over the weekend, going 11-12 from the line.
Despite losing the battle on the boards 41-30, the Aggies had 14 second chance points compared to MSU's nine, who also shot better than CU from the floor at 51 percent. However, the Mustang's 33 turnovers resulted in 26 points for the hometown Aggies.
The Mustangs handled Cameron's press early in the first quarter, leading by four at the first media timeout. But the Black and Gold made a run and led 18-15 at the end of the period.
Cameron then out-scored MSU 24-13 in the second thanks to nine points from King, eight from Peterson and six made three-pointers, giving them a 42 to 28 lead at the half.
The Aggies lead grew to 17 in the third, but the Mustangs ended up winning the frame and trailed by 12 (61-49) heading into the final 10 minutes of action.
In the final quarter, the duo of threes by Outon and strong play of Hedge (nine points in the quarter) helped the Black and Gold build their lead to 26 at the 5:21 mark, which allowed them to cruise to the 20-point win.
Cameron is now 3-0 for the first time since the 2013-14 season when they went 4-0 to open the year. They will try and reach that mark this weekend as they take on Newman in Hays, Kan. on Friday, Nov. 19, at 4 p.m. and then the host and fourth ranked Fort Hays State Tigers on Saturday, Nov. 20, at 4 p.m. as well.
