Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Aggies fall victim to No. 1 LCU's high-powered offense

LUBBOCK, Texas – Connor Slater posted a double-double and Alex Gonzalez had a perfect shooting night but it was not enough to topple No. 1 Lubbock Christian on Tuesday.

The Cameron men's basketball team entered Tuesday night's contest having not played since their overtime win over Western New Mexico on Dec. 2. To try and stretch their win-streak to two games they would have to upset the top team in all of Division II. Despite a strong start by CU, the Chaps flexed their muscle late to run away with an 87-60 win in the non-conference battle.

A cold second half led to the Aggies shooting just 35.6 percent from the field for the game. They were able to knock down seven three-pointers, around their season average, and were 11-13 from the charity stripe. Neither team turned the ball over more than 12 times and LCU controlled the glass by just six board (40-36).

Slater had his 11 points at halftime and ended up going just 3-10 from the field while knocking down two of his three three-point attempts. The third-year forward also grabbed 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.

Gonzalez, a transfer from Cuesta College, had his best night as an Aggie, scoring a team-high 12 points and was a perfect 4-4 from the field (2-2 from three) and 2-2 from the foul line in CU's loss. Deondre Earley added nine points and five rebounds.

The Aggies looked like they would give LCU a run for their money early in the first half as Slater got an and-one and hit a three to give CU a 6-2 lead, but the Chaps quickly turned that around and led by 16 with 4:13 to play in the opening frame. The Aggies were able to cut it to five on a Colt Savage three, but Parker Hicks answered and set the score at 43-36 at the break.

Cameron tried to keep the Chaps at bay in the second half, but the offensive fire power was relentless as their lead ballooned to 32 with 1:28 left in the game. Shots by Earley and John Muhammad dropped the deficit to under 30, with a final score of 87-60.

Resident Aggie-beater Lloyd Daniels scored a game-high 22 points for LCU while four others where in double-figures, including Hicks with 19 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists. The Chaps shot 50.8 percent from the field and were 11-23 from three in the win.

Cameron, now sitting at 2-4 on the young season has another non-conference counting game against a league foe on Saturday, Dec. 18, as they visit Eastern New Mexico. The game against the Greyhounds is scheduled for 5 p.m. (CT).
