Softball powers their way to a pair of wins in Edmond

EDMOND – The Cameron softball team powered their way to two more wins on Sunday, beating Nebraska-Kearney 8-5 and Colorado Christian 4-2 to push their win streak to four games.

In game one against the Lopers of UNK, the twin duo of Brenna Busby and Callie Christensen led the way at the plate, providing five hits and five RBI combined while scoring four runs themselves.

It did not take long for CU to get on the board, plating three runs in the top of the first inning. Busby led off the game with a walk and then, after a Mikayla Richmond single and a passed ball, came in to score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Khmari Edwards. Christensen provided the big blow in the next at-bat, sending the ball well over the centerfield fence to give her team an early 3-0 lead.

UNK quickly responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame, all on a homer by their cleanup hitter. Busby promptly broke that tie in the top of the second when she launched a ball over the centerfield wall, her program record 51st of her career, bringing home Mikayla Oaks and Kaylyn Smith, who both reached via singles in the two previous at-bats.

Cameron extended their three-run advantage in the third as Madyson Marvulli singled in Christensen, who walked to leadoff the inning, and then Breley Webb came in to score on a groundout by Oaks, giving CU an 8-3 lead.

The Lopers were able to get those two runs back in the bottom of the third, thanks to another homer, but from their senior Bethany Hines settled in on the circle and only gave up two hits in the final four innings to secure the 8-5 win for the CU squad.

Hines gave up the five earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out three UNK hitters on her way to her third win of the season and the 67th of her Cameron career.

In the second game of the day against Colorado Christian, it took a couple of innings, by Cameron once again claimed an early lead. CU scored four runs in the top of the third with a pair of runs coming in to score on a Busby double. A few batters later Edwards drove in Busby from third on a single up the middle and then Marvulli wrapped up the inning with an RBI single of her own that allowed Edwards to cross home plate.

Those four runs would be enough, as sophomore Breley Webb was near dominant on the mound. Take away the fourth inning that saw CCU score two runs on a leadoff single and then a two-out homer, and Webb gave up just one hit during the other six innings of the game while striking out eight batters for her second win of the year.

At the plate, Cameron saw Richmond, Edwards, and Maci McMurtrey all record two hits, while Busby had a pair of RBI, giving her five on the day, and scored a run.

The Aggies, who have now won four straight and are 5-1 to start the spring, will wrap up the second leg of the Edmond Festival on Monday when they face Chadron State at 10 a.m. in Edmond before heading to Bethany, Okla. to face Oklahoma Baptist at 3 p.m.
