CU battles UAFS in second-straight three-set loss

LAWTON – The Cameron University volleyball team dropped their second straight three-set match to UAFS on Wednesday night.

When CU and UAFS met on Tuesday night, CU battle the Lady Lions in a pair of 25-23 set losses before being out-matched in the second. On Wednesday, Cameron once again lost the first set 25-23 before losing 25-14 in set two and 25-20 in set three, breaking their trend of split series to start the season.

After trailing early in set one, Cameron used a 5-0 run early to go on top 8-4. Mid-way through the match, a kill by Walia Franklin gave CU their biggest lead of the frame at 16-10. The Lady Lions slowly chipped at the lead and then used a 7-1 rally to close out the set 25-23. The Aggies hit .182 on the attack in set one with 12 kills and three blocks.

UAFS opened set two on a 5-1 run and never looked back, building their lead up to 10 at 20-11 before closing the frame out with an 11-point advantage at 25-14. Cameron stayed out of the negative but hit just .020 with seven kills in the second game.

In the third, Cameron once again trailed early, going down 5-0, but after trailing 10-5, the Black and Gold mounted a rally, scoring eight in a row to take a 13-10 lead over UAFS. The Lady Lions responded and after a Natalie Aruajo da Silva kill that tied the set at 16, the away team went on a 6-0 run that gave that built up a 22-16 lead. CU was able to get back within four multiple times down the stretch, but a kill by Savannah Wharton closed out the set 25-20 and the match 3-0.

After hitting just .122 in the third frame, CU's attack percentage sat at .098 for the match. They recorded 32 kills, four service aces, and 6.0 total blocks (for the second night in a row, Cameron was held under 10 total blocks). On the opposite side of the court, the Lady Lions hit .231 on the attack with 41 kills, eight aces, and 9.0 total stuffs.

Alanni Carter led the Black and Gold with 10 kills, while three other Aggies had five. Arianna Navarrete had a team-high 15 digs, one more than freshman libero Presley Shearin. Desiree Marmolejo added a 15 assist, 10 dig double-double, while freshman Katie Roberson did a bit of everything with 13 assists, three kills, four digs, and two blocks.

Cameron ends the first part of the 2021 spring Lone Star Conference slate with a 2-4 record. They will face the same three teams (UAFS, Oklahoma Christian, and Midwestern State), starting with MSU, who they split with at home, on March 2 and 3 in Wichita Falls, Texas.
