LAWTON – The Aggies led for just 22 seconds of a hard fought battle against UT Tyler on Sunday afternoon, falling 76-66 for their fifth straight loss.
On paper, both during the game and the season, the Cameron men's basketball team and the Patriots were evenly matched with CU coming in at 1-11 on the season and UTT entering at 2-9. However, turnovers played the biggest part in the 10-point loss for CU head coach
Andrew Brown's squad.
The Aggies gave the ball up 22 times in the game, nine of those on Patriots steals, resulting in 20 points off turnovers. On the other side of the court, UTT gave the ball away just 10 times resulting in five points for the Black and Gold.
Other than the giveaways, the two teams were even in almost every category. UT Tyler shot just three percent better from the field and one percent better from the foul line than CU, while the home team Aggies made one more triple than their opponents and out-rebounded them 35-27.
In the first half, Cameron got behind the eight-ball early due to the turnovers, trailing by 12 with 6:10 left in the first 20 minutes of action. The Aggies mounted a 7-0 run in the final two minutes to get back to within four, but a layup from UTT's Da'zhon Wyche increased his team's advantage back up to six, 46-40, which is where the score sat at halftime.
Cameron shot 50 percent from the field, including 7-13 from three and 9-10 from the foul line in the first half;
Brock Schreiner led the way with nine points on three made triples. Fourteen of CU's 22 turnovers came in the first half alone.
In the second frame, the Aggies came out on a mission and cut the lead down to just one, 51-50, on a layup by
Dalton Vinson at the 15:34 mark. The two teams battled back and forth until UTT jumped back out by eight on a three-pointer by Soloman Thomas. The Aggies would get that lead back down to three, 68-65, thanks to a pair of free throws by
Kino Thompson, but went cold, going 0-6 down the stretch while UT Tyler went on a 6-0 in the final 1:25 to earn their third win of the year.
Schreiner led the Aggies with 12 points but did not make a field goal in the final 20 minutes of play.
Marques Warrior Jr. had nine points (5-5 FTA) and a team-high five assists, while
Hunter Quick led the Black and Gold with eight rebounds in just 16 minutes on the floor.
The Black and Gold will get another crack at the Patriots on Monday as the two teams meet again in the Aggie Gym for another Lone Star Conference crossover battle. The series finale is set to tip at 4 p.m.
